Lehigh Rallies to Win League Opener 6-1 at Army, Game Two Suspended

3/26/2022 6:11:00 PM | Softball

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Playing in it's Patriot League opener, the Lehigh softball team scored three runs in each of the final two innings to erase a 1-0 deficit and top Army West Point 6-1 Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader at the Army Softball Complex.

Game two was suspended due to weather and poor field conditions and will be resumed Sunday along with the series finale at a time to be determined. Lehigh was batting in the top of the fourth inning with a 4-3 lead.

Senior Gabriella Nori delivered an outstanding pitching performance in the Mountain Hawks' game one win. She allowed just one run on six hits in a complete game effort, with 10 strikeouts and no walks, to improve to 4-6 on the season.

After Lehigh left two runners on base in the top of the first, Army (8-20) took the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the frame as Kayla Edwards homered to left field with one out. Edwards had three of the Black Knights' six hits off Nori.

The Mountain Hawks continued to trail 1-0 into the sixth when they put the first two runners on base. Army recorded the first out of the inning on a fielder's choice. Black Knights' pitcher Jolie Duong then threw away sophomore Brooke Cannon's comebacker, allowing the tying run to score and then a throwing error by the right fielder on the same play allowed first-year Rory Dudley to slide in safely with the go-ahead run. Senior Karsen O'Rourke then dropped down a squeeze bunt with Cannon beating the throw to home plate.

Lehigh added on to its lead with three runs in the seventh. Chesson delivered a two-run home run to straightaway center field, her fifth of the season. Dudley followed with a double and later scored on a single by O'Rourke.

The Mountain Hawks had nine hits in game one, with Chesson and senior Carley Barjaktarovich leading the way with two apiece. Lehigh also benefitted from four Army errors, which led to four of the six runs allowed by Duong being unearned.

The game one win moved the Mountain Hawks' record to 8-11.

Game two saw the lead go back and forth through the first two and a half innings. Junior Emily Cimino homered with one out in the first to put Lehigh in front, but Army answered with a two run home run by Leila Hurst in the bottom of the inning.

Lehigh tied the game in the second as sophomore Amanda Greaney doubled home Cannon, but the Black Knights regained the lead on a single by Hurst.

An RBI single by Dudley and a run-scoring ground out by Cannon put Lehigh up 4-3 in the top of the third inning. Play was halted in the top of the fourth inning as first-year Hanna Aldrich drew a one out walk.
