BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh sophomore Guusje Hogendoorn was honored as this week's Patriot League Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week, announced Monday afternoon by the league.
Â
The Mountain Hawks' earned their 11th win of the season with a 5-0 shutout victory over Colgate on Senior Day Saturday, before dropping their final regular season match to Columbia in overtime on Sunday afternoon. This is the first time since 1985-86 that the program has reached double-digit wins for back-to-back seasons and Lehigh has qualified for the Patriot League Tournament in consecutive years for the first time since 2004-2005.
Hogendoorn contributed five points this weekend, scoring two goals in the Mountain Hawks victory over Colgate, followed by an assist in Lehigh's non-league overtime loss to Columbia on Sunday afternoon. She opened the third period versus the Raiders with a goal just over a minute into the second half, then recorded her second goal of the game eight minutes later to put Hogendoorn at three goals this season. She then assisted Lehigh's lone goal in its 2-1 loss in overtime against Columbia, which set her teammate up perfectly to beat the goalkeeper in the third period.
Â
Senior Maddie Kahn, junior Julia Gatelein and first-year Maddie Kandra were also selected as honorable mentions for their efforts against Holy Cross on Monday.
Â
Kahn went 1-1 this past week to improve her record to 11-7 overall this season. She totaled 13 saves with a shutout, her third of the season, with a save percentage of .917 and allowed two goals. In the 5-0 shutout victory over Colgate Saturday, Kahn registered three saves for a 1.000 save percentage and posted her third shutout of the season and the ninth of her career. All three saves she needed to make, were made in the first half. Kahn made 10 saves and had a .833 save percentage in the overtime loss to Columbia, where she recorded six of them in the first half.Â
Gatelein continues to set herself apart from others on the field, being a crucial part of the Lehigh defense that recorded its third shutout of the season against Colgate in Patriot League action. She was all over the field and making things difficult for the Raiders to get passes through the midfield held the squad to just two penalty corners. In a battle with Columbia on Sunday, Gatelein was able to force the Lions' offense into miscues.
Kandra scored a pair of goals in a 5-0 shutout victory over Colgate on Saturday. Her first goal was one of three goals scored in the third period versus the Raiders, followed by a fourth period goal that was assisted by Bonthuis, which broke the single-season record for assists in a season.
Â
Lehigh (11-7, 4-2 Patriot League) earned the No. 3Â seed in the 2022 Patriot League Tournament which will be hosted by American on Thursday and Saturday this week. The Mountain Hawks will take on the host Eagles at 2 p.m. on Thursday afternoon, which follows the first match of the day between one-seed Boston University and four-seed Bucknell at 11 a.m. Tickets are encouraged to be purchased in advance and can be done so by clciking here.
