1-1 Draw At Bucknell Secures Home Quarterfinal Game for Lehigh

10/26/2022 9:57:00 PM | Women's Soccer

LEWISBURG, Pa. - An early goal from junior Ava Schaller followed by a Bucknell goal with 48 seconds remaining in the first half led to a 1-1 draw in the Lehigh women's soccer team's final game of the regular season Wednesday night on Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium.

The Mountain Hawks (7-6-3, 5-2-2 PL) secured the No. 4 seed in the Patriot League Tournament and will host No. 5 Navy in a quarterfinal Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Ulrich Sports Complex.

"It's incredibly positive that we are able to secure a spot not only in the postseason but we have a home field advantage so tonight's game was just a battle for a higher seed and we came out with a draw," said head coach Lauren Calabrese. "It was a really tough game. The last regular season game of the year so people are tired, fatigued and it's in the middle of the week when we have exams so I think we battled in a way that we could. There's a lot of things to learn from it for sure but I think we have positive things to look forward to."

Bucknell came out with fire, putting up a shot within the first two minutes of the game. First-year goalkeeper Maggie Ousouljoglou made the save for Lehigh, igniting a spark in the Mountain Hawks.

In the 12th minute, a team effort from the Lehigh offense led to Schaller's goal to give the Mountain Hawks the early 1-0 lead. Senior Mattie Murphy beat two Bucknell defenders before passing the ball to sophomore Corinne Lyght. Lyght crossed the ball from just inside the 18-yard box, hitting the feet of two Bucknell defenders before Schaller was able to place the ball behind Bucknell goalkeeper Jenna Hall.

"We know Ava has a goal-scoring ability so for her to find her stride right now is clutch," Calabrese said. "As we're heading into postseason play, we're really happy with her level of play and the players in our attacking group. We definitely know we can get more out of more players but it's great when one or two players step up for us."

The Bison continued to bring offensive pressure but the Lehigh defense remained intact, holding on to the 1-0 lead for a majority of the first half. With less than a minute to play in the half, Bucknell's Meghan White sent a shot from just outside the 18-yard box to tie the score at 1-1.

Lehigh had two shot attempts within the first two minutes of the second half but could not find the back of the net. The Bison and Mountain Hawks continued to alternate possession throughout the final 45 minutes of play, taking turns making saves to keep the score tied.

In the 83rd minute, Bucknell's Abby Gearhart made her way past the Lehigh defense but Ousouljoglou came up big for the Mountain Hawks, making her final save of the game to secure the 1-1 draw.

Bucknell led Lehigh in shots 21-12 while Ousouljoglou led with five saves compared to Hall's three.

Lehigh defeated its quarterfinal opponent Navy 2-0 on Oct. 7 at the Ulrich Sports Complex.

"Historically, Navy has been a really formidable opponent so you can't underestimate or look at records," said Calabrese. "You have to approach it like it's a whole new season. We're going to battle. We're going to prepare and I think it should give us confidence that we beat them the first time around but they're still going to battle. We're looking for it to be a really good game."
