10/23/2022 7:53:00 PM | Volleyball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh volleyball team suffered a 3-1 loss (21-25, 25-23, 22-25, 15-25) to Lafayette in The Rivalry presented by Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall on Sunday evening.

The Mountain Hawks are now 12-11 overall and 3-8 in Patriot League play while the Leopards improve to 7-11 this season and 4-7 in league contests.

"Ultimately, the service line and blocking at the net was the difference in today's match," commented head coach Alexa Keckler.

Lafayette opened the match with a 3-0 lead before Lehigh scored its first point of the contest. The Leopards extended their advantage to 7-3, then the Mountain Hawks scored six-straight points to take their first lead of the night at 9-7. Both squads exchanged points and the lead as they were tied at 16-16. From that point on, Lafayette held their edge and claimed the first set, 25-21.

Lehigh and Lafayette battled in the second set and continued with tight play as the Mountain Hawks knotted things up at 12-12 and multiple occasions the rest of the set. After the Leopards moved in front, 16-14, Lehigh regained the lead at 17-16. The Mountain Hawks went up by two points, 21-19, before Lafayette recorded three consecutive points to take a 22-21 edge, but Lehigh tallied three straight points of their own to take a 24-22 advantage. The Mountain Hawks evened the match at 1-1 with a 25-23 set two victory.

The Mountain Hawks opened set three with a point and both squads scored one point after another as they were tied at 3-3. Lafayette rallied four unanswered points to push ahead, 6-3. Lehigh continued to inch back and knotted the contest at 10-10.  The Leopards put together another run of four-straight points to take a 14-10 advantage, however, Lehigh countered with a five-point run to regain the lead, 15-14, and again at 17-16. Lafayette rallied once more and remained ahead for the rest of set three, putting the Bison up 2-1 after three sets.

Lafayette went up 8-0 in the fourth set before Lehigh would get on the scoreboard, but the Mountain Hawks fought back and came within three points at 13-10 after scoring five-straight points. The Leopards stretched their advantage once again and closed out the set and match, earning a 3-1 win over Lehigh.

"There was some gritty play from both teams, which is expected in a match between these programs, and we put up a good fight, but we were unable to get the job done," concluded Keckler.

First-year Natalie Luscomb and sophomore Megan Schulte both finished the match with eight kills. Luscomb added four blocks and did not make an error for a hitting percentage of .381 while Schulte also contributed four blocks and three digs. Sophomore Emily Stewart registered six kills for the Mountain Hawks to go with six blocks and three digs.

Lehigh totaled 16 team blocks Sunday, led by first year Madison McCartney who made nine blocks, with one solo block, to go with three digs and three kills. Stewart finished with six blocks and three other Mountain Hawks recorded four blocks each.
