
Lehigh Suffers Setback at Army West Point

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Lehigh volleyball program battled with Army West Point in Patriot League action, but fell in straight sets (25-20, 25-21, 26-24) on Friday evening. The Mountain Hawks fall to 12-12 on the year and 3-9 in league play while the Black Knights improve to 14-8 overall and 10-2 in Patriot League competition.
Both teams opened the match with a point before Army recorded three straight points to take a 4-1 lead. Lehigh countered with three points of its own to tie the set at 4-4, but the Black Knights extended their advantage to 13-6. Lehigh found itself behind 23-16 when a surge of four-consecutive points cut the deficit to three points, 23-20. Army would tally the next two points and claimed set one.
Army began set two with a point and took a 7-4 edge as the Mountain Hawks scored three-straight to knot the set at 7-7. The Black Knights put together four consecutive points to go back in front, 11-7, and was ahead by at most five points on multiple occasions, but Lehigh did not give up and came within two points at 17-15. Both squads scored in three-point spurts, with Lehigh getting it back to a two-point deficit, but would drop set two by a score of 25-21 and behind the Black Knights 2-0 in the match.
Lehigh fell behind 2-0 before matching Army with two points of its own, 2-2. The Black Knights largest lead in the match was only by three points, as set three went back-and-forth. The Mountain Hawks trailed 16-13 but would claw back and tied the set at 16-16 and Lehigh managed to take a two-point edge at 20-18. Army answered with five-consecutive points to go back in front by three, 23-20. Lehigh did tie the set at 24-24 after being down by two, but Army recorded the final two points and handed Lehigh a straight-set loss.
Leading the Mountain Hawks in kills was sophomore Megan Schulte, who contributed ten kills, two digs, an assist and a service ace while first-year Natalie Luscomb finished the match with seven kills, two blocks and one dig.
Sophomore Makena Smith contributed four kills to go with her team-leading 21 assists and added seven digs two service aces and a block. First year Dakota Hartman also finished the match with four kills and registered two blocks, a service ace and one assist. Sophomore Kyleigh Brown led the squad with 17 digs while adding four assists.
Lehigh is back in action tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 29 to take on Holy Cross in a Patriot League match. The contest is scheduled for 4 p.m.
