Mountain Hawks Score Most Goals in 17 Years in 7-2 Win at Colgate

Â
"I see a team that was really frustrated they got shut out last weekend and worked really hard to make adjustments and be more locked in in the circle and they were able to do that today," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "We had a lot of different goal scorers, which always makes me happy, because I think we have attacking threats in a lot of different areas. I'm really pleased with the work they did this week to be able to perform the way they did today."
Â
Lehigh improves to 5-3 overall, 2-0 in the Patriot League for a second straight season. This after previously not beginning 2-0 since 1996.
Â
"There's a lot that hasn't been done here in a long time or hasn't been done yet and we have the athletes here because they want to be the change and they're proving that they're capable of doing it," said Dallmeyer. "It's showing in results. I'm really happy with where we are right now, with the process of what it took to get them here and the ownership they're taking on being the change this program needs to move forward."
Â
Lehigh quickly took a 2-0 lead behind early goals from Bonthuis and fifth-year senior Drew Pecora.
Â
That score remained until the second quarter, which saw four total goals. First, Bonthuis scored her second of the afternoon via a similar fashion as her fast – also coming off a rebound. Bonthuis is up to a team-leading seven goals on the season, while also dishing an assist on Saturday.
Â
Â
"We had almost a whole practice just dedicated to rebounding and making sure we were in good position," said Dallmeyer. "We shifted some things strategy-wise to put ourselves in better positions for the rebound. And of course, we set the expectation that we would do it and we did."
Â
Colgate pulled within 3-1 later in the second quarter before two late-quarter goals gave Lehigh a 5-1 halftime lead. In similar plays, first, sophomore Julia Gatelein found sophomore Lotte Smorenburg at the far post, who tapped it in for her first-career goal. In the final minute of the quarter, senior Olivia Perrone made a feed to junior MJ Schwab in a similar position.
Â
The second half saw Lehigh quickly open a 7-1 lead, with goals from graduate student Lenke Havas and senior Sam Nason. Colgate would pull within 7-2 and have a number of chances in the fourth quarter, but the Mountain Hawks wrapped up the five-goal victory.
Â
The win improves Lehigh's record to 3-0 after losses this season. The Mountain Hawks hope to make it two in a row on Sunday when they host Sacred Heart at 1 p.m.
Â
"Consistency is something we're working on as a program," said Dallmeyer. "We can be a good team, but a great team needs to be consistent. We're going to focus on recovering – mental and physical – and make sure we're doing what we need to do in the next couple hours to put out a good performance again tomorrow."
