Lehigh Drops Tough 1-0 Final at LIU in Overtime

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The Lehigh field hockey team struggled to generate many chances through three quarters, but had a flurry of seven shots on goal in the span of 5:01 in the fourth. However, it wasn't enough, as LIU capitalized on a penalty stroke in overtime to defeat the Mountain Hawks, 1-0 on Sunday afternoon. The loss moves Lehigh to 4-3 overall, but the Mountain Hawks remain 1-0 in the Patriot League ahead of a Saturday showdown at Colgate.

The first half saw just six combined shots – five from LIU and one from Lehigh. Junior Maddie Kahn made a trio of first-half saves to keep the game scoreless.

The third quarter was much of the same with each side firing one shot, both of which were on goal, and both of which were stopped by the respective goalkeepers.

The fourth quarter was when the Mountain Hawks turned the momentum in their favor. A shot on goal by sophomore Abbie Brown at the 51:20 mark began a flurry of chances. Following Brown were two consecutive shots on goal from fifth-year senior Drew Pecora, followed by consecutive shots on frame from junior Sarah Bonthuis. Shots from junior MJ Schwab and senior Leah Mullery rounded out the opportunities, which saw five saves from LIU goalkeeper Rachel Vellis, along with Sharks' defensive saves. The Mountain Hawks also created four fourth-quarter penalty corners.

Lehigh pressured early in overtime, but couldn't get a shot off. The first official shot of the extra session came at the 65:58 mark as a penalty stroke was called and LIU made the most of it to walk off with the 1-0 victory.

Final shots were 10-9 in favor of LIU while the Mountain Hawks held a 6-2 edge in penalty corners.

Lehigh will return to action next weekend, playing at Colgate on Saturday (11 a.m.) before hosting Sacred Heart on Sunday (1 p.m.).
