Lancaster notches 1,000th career kill; Mountain Hawks drop pair at Towson

9/11/2021 9:54:00 PM | Volleyball

TOWSON, Md. – Lehigh volleyball won the first set of the afternoon vs. Florida Atlantic, but dropped the next six to fall to 2-7 to start the 2021 season. The Mountain Hawks were topped by FAU in four sets (25-23, 23-25, 6-25, 23-25) to begin the day and fell in straight sets to Temple (18-25, 21-25, 26-28) in the nightcap.

Notably, fifth year senior Sabrina Lancaster registered 10 kills against FAU, becoming just the 11th player in program history to reach 1,000 career kills. With 22 kills between the two matches on the day, Lancaster finishes the weekend with 1,020 kills for her career, good for 10th on the all-time leaderboard.

The first set of the first match of the day was a battle for Lehigh, getting out to an early lead with three straight points to kick it off. The Mountain Hawks led by as many as five points before losing the lead near the halfway point of the set. Freshman Emily Stewart rattled off two straight service aces before a Sabrina Lancaster kill gave Lehigh the 25-23 victory.

The Mountain Hawks had control of the beginning of the second set, trading paint for the beginning, but the Owls figured out to control the action back, grabbing six straight points to go from down 13-15 to leading 17-16. Stewart brought Lehigh back within three points, but the Owls scored four straight to win the set, 25-23.

After FAU dominated the third set by going on a 15-2 run to close it out and winning 25-6, the Mountain Hawks fought back in the fourth to a 10-10 tie. Lehigh had the score tied two more times in the set, before FAU held on for the two-point victory.

Fifth year Hannah Wright led the way with 13 kills, while freshman Megan Schulte had 12 and Lancaster finished with 10. Sophomore setter Sarah Burau had 35 assists and eight digs, while freshman libero Kyleigh Brown led the way with 11 digs. Stewart was dominant at the net, totaling six block assists to go along with her seven kills.

Lehigh hit .211 for the match, including .323 in the first, .323 in the second and .250 in the fourth.

Temple went wire-to-wire to win the first set, 25-18, as the Mountain Hawks couldn't get any closer to the lead than one point at 8-7. Lehigh pulled within five points late, but the Owls held on for the 25-18 victory.

At 13-9, the Mountain Hawks saw themselves leading by four, trying to draw even in the match, but the Owls continued to dominate, going on a 10-4 run to take a 19-17 lead. Six of the next 10 points went in favor of Temple, as it took the 25-21 win and the two-set cushion.

Lehigh kept it close in the third set, battling until the bitter end, as a Temple attack error forced extra time at 24-24. Both teams traded blows back and fourth until the Owls got two kills, both by Gem Grimshaw to pull away for the three-set sweep and 28-26 third set win.

It was Sabrina Lancaster who led Lehigh in kills with 12, while Hannah Wright had 11, Megan Schulte finished with eight and Emily Stewart had five. Freshman setter Makena Smith bounced back with 31 assists and nine digs, while Ally Thaw spent time as the starting libero, totaling 15 digs.

The Mountain Hawks hit .167 for the match with 20 errors as a team.

Lehigh, who has lost three straight matches, returns to Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. to face Penn. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+.
