BETHLEHEM, Pa. – As the Lehigh field hockey team continues to reach new heights on the field, the program continues to receive well-deserved recognition. On Tuesday, senior Lenke Havas and sophomore Maddie Kahn were named NFHCA All-Mideast Region (Havas first team and Kahn second team). Havas becomes the first Mountain Hawk named first team All-Region since Christy Smith in 2007 and just the second first team All-Region honoree in program history. One season after Lehigh had multiple All-Region honorees for the first time in program history (Havas and Drew Pecora), it did it again in the spring of 2021.
The Mountain Hawks have now featured five All-Region honors (Havas three times, Pecora and Kahn) over the last three seasons after none the previous six.
A three-time first team All-Patriot League honoree, Havas became the program's first-ever four-time All-Patriot League honoree (she was named to the second team as a first-year). A difference maker all over the field, Havas saw significant time in the midfield and at center back this spring. Offensively, she posted three goals and six points, both tied for the team high. Havas scored twice in Lehigh's 4-0 win over Bucknell, the largest margin of victory against the Bison in program history. She also scored a big first-half goal at No. 20 Boston University. Havas made a defensive save at American while helping anchor a defense that allowed its fewest goals (and had its best scoring margin) in Patriot League play since 1996.
Named Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year, Kahn was dominant in four games played this spring – stopping 29 of the 33 shots sent her way for an 87.9 save percentage, which was good for second nationally. She was also second in the country in saves per game (7.25). Kahn helped Lehigh to consecutive shutouts to open the season for the first time since 2000, as the Mountain Hawks defeated Lafayette and Bucknell in the same season for the first time since 2004. Kahn followed those shutouts with eight saves vs. Holy Cross and 10 stops at American. One of those goals against the Eagles came on a penalty stroke. Kahn was twice named Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week. She posted a 1.01 goals against average, a program record for a season, while her save percentage was good for fourth in program history.
Lehigh began the spring with wins over Lafayette (1-0) and eventual Patriot League Champion Bucknell (4-0), the first time since 2004 that the Mountain Hawks beat both the Leopards and Bison. Despite losses in the next three, Lehigh gave itself a chance until the very end vs. Holy Cross, had its smallest margin at American (2-0) since 2001, then despite being shorthanded with personnel, gave itself a chance deep into the second half at a nationally-ranked opponent.
