BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following its first win at Lafayette since 2005, a pair of Lehigh field hockey student-athletes won Patriot League weekly awards on Monday, as sophomore Maddie Kahn was named Goalkeeper of the Week while first-year Julia Gatelein garnered Rookie of the Week.
Â
The award marks Kahn's fourth-career Patriot League weekly award and third Goalkeeper of the Week honor. On Sunday, Kahn officially made two saves, but also made a number of other big plays not seen in the stat sheet, to help Lehigh to the 1-0 win - the program's first win at Lafayette since 2005 (snapping a seven-game losing streak). For perspective, Lafayette got shut-out just three times in 20 games last season. Kahn's saves came at opportune times in the second and fourth quarters. Lafayette had a surge of three corners and two shots in the final seven minutes of the game, but Kahn and the Lehigh defense stood tall.
Â
While Kahn helped anchor the defense, Gatelein provided the offense. In her first collegiate game, she scored the game's only goal at the 40:51 mark. It came off a penalty corner, as Lenke Havas fired the ball towards cage, it was blocked by a defender and went to Gatelein. She subsequently beat Lafayette goalkeeper Hailey Abbott.
Â
The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Sunday, Mar. 21 when they host Bucknell at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
