10/8/2021 11:26:00 AM | Field Hockey
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Winners of four straight and six of its last seven, the Lehigh field hockey team returns home this weekend for a pair of big games. The Mountain Hawks begin by hosting No. 23 American on Saturday (11 a.m.) and Temple on Sunday (1 p.m.). Both games can be seen on ESPN+. As part of Lehigh's four-game winning streak, it has scored 20 goals while allowing just three.
Â
The Mountain Hawks, who now lead the Patriot League in scoring (3.27 per game) enter the weekend in sole possession of first place in the league standings at 3-0 (8-3 overall). Since being 2-2, Lehigh beat Georgetown and Boston University, lost at LIU then has won four in a row (at Colgate, vs. Sacred Heart, at Holy Cross and at Merrimack). The Mountain Hawks' eight wins are already their most since 2007. Lehigh's 6-1 stretch is its best seven-game stretch since 1986. Saturday's contest vs. American will feature the only two remaining unbeatens in the Patriot League (Lehigh 3-0, American 2-0).
Â
Last weekend, Lehigh won at Holy Cross (5-0) and Merrimack (4-1). It marked the Mountain Hawks' largest-ever margin of victory against the Crusaders, as Lehigh's defense did not allow a single shot on goal all game (and just four shots). A part of that defense, Guusje Hogendoorn, was recognized with Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors. Lehigh has already won all four weekly awards this season.
Â
The Mountain Hawks will be facing perennial Patriot League power American on Saturday. Ranked 23rd nationally, the Eagles are 6-3 on the season (2-0 in league play). American's wins have come over Lafayette (1-0 in overtime) and Bucknell (3-2). The Eagles also own ranked wins vs. VCU and UMass. Reigning Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year Noor Coenen leads American in goals (5), assists (4) and points (14). Imogen Hatton is second in points with five via two goals and an assist. Georgia Davies and Charllene Boshoff each have a defensive save. Bryn Underwood is a three-time league Goalkeeper of the Week in 2021 and has tallied a 1.60 goals against average and 76.9 save percentage.
Â
American leads the all-time series with Lehigh, 23-0. Last season, the Mountain Hawks dropped a slim 2-0 final – one of several close calls. Twice, Lehigh has taken the Eagles to overtime, falling 1-0 in 2015 and 6-5 in 2006.
Â
Temple hold a 6-4 record entering a Friday Big East showdown at Providence. The Owls are 2-1 in the conference, most recently falling at Georgetown, 1-0. Julianne Kopec leads Temple in goals (5) and points (10) with Tess Muller not far behind (six points – two goals, two assists). Nienke Oerlamans leads the way in defensive saves (2). Megan Ragusa has played every minute in goal, tallying a 1.13 GAA and 75.0 save percentage.
Â
Temple holds a 14-5-3 all-time lead against Lehigh, with the last meeting coming in 2008, a 5-0 Owls' victory. Lehigh's last win came in 2003 at home via a 1-0 final. The sides first met in 1978, a 1-0 Lehigh victory.
Â
Following this weekend's games, the Mountain Hawks hit the road next Saturday, Oct. 16 for Bucknell. Gametime is set for 11:30 a.m.
