Mountain Hawks to Close Regular Season at Wagner Sunday

10/28/2021 8:14:00 PM | Field Hockey

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Winners of two straight and seven of its last nine, the Lehigh field hockey team will close out the regular season with a nonleague showdown at Wagner Sunday. Gametime is set for 12 p.m. on NEC Front Row. The Mountain Hawks stand 11-5 on the season, 4-2 in Patriot League play, owning their most overall wins since 1994 and most league victories since 1996.

On Sunday, Lehigh will be vying for its 12th victory, which would tie its win total from 1994 and tie for the fourth most wins in a season in program history (the top three all coming between 1983 and 1986).

The Mountain Hawks are coming off a thrilling 3-2 overtime win over Lafayette last Friday. A resilient effort saw Lehigh bounce back from early holes of 1-0 and 2-0, in each case scoring the equalizer less than four minutes later. Fifth-year senior Drew Pecora scored the Mountain Hawks' first goal, followed by junior Sydney White scoring the second. Graduate student Lenke Havas sent Lehigh home winners with a penalty-stroke goal in the final minute of overtime. She also assisted on both regulation goals to give her five for the season and 21 for her career, which tied a program record.

White was recognized by the Patriot League on Monday with Defensive Player of the Week honors, for her efforts at center back, coupled with her big goal. It marked White's third goal this month (also at Merrimack and Bucknell) after none in her career up until that point.

Sunday will serve as a final tune-up for the Patriot League Tournament, which begins with the semifinals on Thursday, Nov. 4 at No. 1 overall seed American. Lehigh will be the No. 3 or 4 seed in the tournament, depending on the result of Saturday's Bucknell at Lafayette game. In its fourth year as a varsity program, Wagner is in the midst of its strongest season. The Seahawks have qualified for the NEC Tournament, owning a 8-9 overall record and 5-2 conference mark. On Thursday, Wagner picked up an impressive 10-2 home win over Merrimack in a game in which it scored on 10 of its 12 shots on goal. The Seahawks scored five in the first quarter and wouldn't look back. Prior to that, the Seahawks picked up 2-1 wins over Sacred Heart and Rider. Julia Pastorino leads Wagner in goals (12) and points (31) while Liselotte Koop is second in points with 25 behind eight goals and a team-leading nine assists. Daisy Ruhle has started all but one game in goal, recording a 1.76 goals against average and 77.1 save percentage.

Lehigh and Wagner have played only once in their history, a 5-1 Mountain Hawks' victory in 2019 that gave them a 5-1 start to the season for their best start in 36 years.

Following Sunday's contest, Lehigh will prepare for its first Patriot League Tournament since 2011. The semifinals are set for Thursday, Nov. 4 and if the Mountain Hawks win, they'd advance to the championship game on Saturday, Nov. 6. Both semifinal contests and the title game will be played at No. 1 overall seed American.
