Wagner Comes Back to Beat Lehigh in Regular Season Finale in OT

Â
Lehigh finished the afternoon with 11 corners, but couldn't capitalize, as Wagner goalkeeper Daisy Ruhle posted seven saves.
Â
"We didn't execute our corners," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "We had plenty of opportunities. We had a lot of shots on net, but they have a strong goalkeeper. We need to be better with shot selection and finding more opportunities to release our shots in the circle."
Â
After a scoreless first quarter, Pecora got Lehigh on the board just 1:04 into the second, as the Mountain Hawks fired three of the four second-quarter shots and took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Â
That advantage quickly increased to 2-0 less than four minutes into the second as Bonthuis scored her 10th goal of the season, becoming the second Lehigh player to reach double figures (along with graduate student Lenke Havas). It marks the first time in program history Lehigh has featured multiple 10+ goal scorers in a season.
Â
However, Wagner pulled within 2-1 less than a minute later. Bonthuis had a response in the 43rd minute, putting home a rebound to give her 11 on the season (to tie Havas for the team lead).
Â
The Seahawks took advantage of a 49th-minute penalty stroke to pull within 3-2. They then scored the equalizer with just 3:20 remaining.
Â
Despite Wagner being assessed a green card 50 seconds into overtime, the Mountain Hawks couldn't capitalize and it was the Seahawks who put home the game-winner at the 62:26 mark.
Â
Final shots were 15-9 in favor of Lehigh while the Mountain Hawks held an 11-7 edge in penalty corners.
Â
"Mentally, we struggled to consistently be checked into this game," said Dallmeyer. "We had an okay first half then tried to make adjustments to help in the second, but weren't able to do it effectively. Small details really matter in overtime and we missed many opportunities to capitalize when Wagner was man down for a card.
Â
"It just didn't happen for us today," Dallmeyer continued. "We need to be better moving forward."
Â
Lehigh will now prepare for its first Patriot League Tournament since 2011. The semifinals are set for Thursday, Nov. 4 at 11 a.m. at No. 17 American. If the Mountain Hawks win, they'd advance to the championship game on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 12 p.m. The entire tournament can be seen on ESPN+.
Â
"We're disappointed with our performance today, but in finding the silver lining, we are a team that has proven to bounce back well," said Dallmeyer. "I know we'll be able to make adjustments, shift our mentality and compete for a championship this week."
