Lehigh shows improvement on final day of Benbow Invitational

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Five of Lehigh's six tournament entrants improved on their day one scores as the Lehigh women's golf team closed out action at Butler's Benbow Invitational Tuesday at Jacksonville Beach Golf Course. The Mountain Hawks posted a 13-stroke improvement from Monday, shooting 324 and moving up to 11th place in a 14-team field at 661 (337-324).
 
Senior Minuette Laessig led the way for the Mountain Hawks, shooting 76 Tuesday, the best round of the 36-hole event for Lehigh, to move into a tie for 23rd place at 159 (83-76).
 
Junior Angela Ding improved from an 84 Monday to an 81 Tuesday to tie for 45th place at 165.
 
Lehigh's low player in Monday's opening round, freshman Iris Shin, shot 86 Tuesday to tie for 47th at 166 (80-86).
 
The biggest Monday to Tuesday improvement came from freshman Hannah Foster, who rebounded from a 91 to shoot 81 and tie for 63rd.
 
Senior Rebecca Markunas tied for 74th place at 178 (90-88).
 
Lehigh also had one individual, freshman Marina Mendez, who shot 88 Tuesday and tied for 78th place at 184 (96-88).
 
St. John's shot 296 on Tuesday to win the team title with a final score of 605 (309-296). The Red Storm beat Quinnipiac by seven strokes, while Austin Peay finished third, 18 strokes off the pace.
 
The individual medalist was Puthita Khuanrudee of Youngstown State, who shot 146 (76-70) to earn a one stroke victory over Jessie Kweon of St. John's.
 
Next up for the Mountain Hawks will be the Kingsmill Intercollegiate, March 30-31 in Williamsburg, Va.
