BRONX, N.Y. – Leading the team for the second straight week, Brad DeMassa paced the Lehigh men's cross country team on Friday morning. The Mountain Hawks finished eighth in the Iona Meet of Champions with a score of 184. Friday morning's competition was held at the historic Van Cortlandt Park.
Competing with 17 other teams, Lehigh managed to register its top five runners inside the top 55. DeMassa was the first Brown and White runner to cross the finish line at 24th with a time of 25:48.50. "I'm quite impressed with Brad," stated head coach Todd Etters. "He's very consistent as he's recognized that we need someone in the front of the race and he capitalizes on it."
Iona won the race today with a low score of 38. The Gaels had three runners inside the top-5. The 49ers of Charlotte finished second with a score of 66.
After missing the previous two races, Seth Slavin rejoined the team in the Bronx on Friday. The Mountain Hawks missed his presence as the junior finished second for Lehigh and 31st overall with a time of 25:58.30. "Seth is so talented, he's capable of pushing himself and maximizing his effort all the time," stated Etters. "It will never be a lack of effort or focus, he's a great leader by example."
For the second consecutive weekend, Michael Mitchell finished third for Lehigh. The junior notched a 37th place finish with a time of 26:07.80. Not far behind Mitchell, teammate Jeffrey Kirshenbaum finished two seconds behind Mitchell to earn a 38th place finish.
Rounding out the scoring for Lehigh, Junior Sean Brown finished fifth for the Mountain Hawks. Brown left the Bronx finishing in 54th with a time of 26:35.60.
"Overall, I think we have to do a better job at sticking together throughout the hard part of the races," added Etters. "We're not elevating our game from practices to the actual races. We need to do a better job at that."
Lehigh was running without the reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Week. Freshman Connor Melko missed the race due to an illness.
After four straight weekend races, Lehigh will get its much-needed rest as they prepare to host the 46th running of the Paul Short Run on Oct. 5. "It's going to do us good mentally knowing that we have time to rest and heal up. The training is not going to get easier; it's going to get harder. We're looking forward to racing on Oct.5.
Up next, Lehigh will take a much-needed break and prepare for the Paul Short Run on Oct. 5.
