BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's cross country team took part in the 46th running of the Paul Short Run on Saturday morning. In front of a packed crowd, the Mountain Hawks finished 24th out of the 44-team field in the men's Gold 8K race with a score of 616.
For the Brown and White, Seth Slavin and Brad DeMassa paced the Mountain Hawks throughout the race. Slavin was the first Lehigh member to finish (24:24.60) at 74th, while DeMassa finished just one second behind him (24:25.80) to finish 76th.
"When Seth and Brad are running together up front, it's a great indicator of what kind of energy you can have when two teammates go stride for stride," said head coach Todd Etters. "When they (Seth and Brad) set the tone, it lets everyone else on the team want to do it for each other."
Sean Brown was the third Lehigh finisher to cross the line (137th) at 24:49.70. Michael Mitchell finished 155th on the day with a time of 24:54.80. Rounding out the top-5 for Lehigh, senior Jeffrey Kirshenbaum registered a 224th place finish at 25:17.80.
"I was quite pleased with our pack running today. Our guys did a great job of being calm," Etters said. "They did a really good job of just sticking together. We were right where we wanted to be after the first mile."
Connor Melko was the sixth Lehigh finisher on Saturday. The freshman finished 256th at 25:30.40. The seventh Lehigh finisher was Ryan Paradise (270th) as the senior tallied a time of 25:35.80.
"We have four really good guys that are showing that they are consistent and compete against some of the best guys in the conference," added Etters. "Then we have two guys who can develop and really solidify our team. We're leaving today knowing that we can still improve and be better.
For the third straight year, Utah State won the Paul Short Run, dominating the field. The Aggies finished with a score 49 points, while the Quakers of Penn finished second with 144 points. Utah State had three runners place inside the top-10.
Hofsra's Alex Masai crossed the finish line first among the 380-runner field. The senior finished with a time of 23:17.50.
The Mountain Hawks also had members of their team compete in the 8K Open race on Saturday morning. Freshman Tyler French finished 113th at 25:50.20, while Thomas Leitner registered a 141st place finish at 26:07.60 for Lehigh.
Up next, the Brown and White will compete in the Penn State National Open on Oct. 18.
