UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The Lehigh men's cross country team finished ninth at the Penn State National Open on Friday. Competing among the 11-team field, the Mountain Hawks scored a total of 209 points, while having two runners inside the top-30.

The Temple Owls won the event on Saturday with a score of 56 points, while the Quakers of Penn took second with a score of 71.

When the race started, the Brown and White got off to a bit of a slow start, as they played the catching up game throughout the entirety of the race. Despite the slow start, the men battled through adversity and dug throughout the field during the race.

For the third straight race, Lehigh was once again led by Seth Slavin and Brad DeMassa. The dynamic duo was once again a force on Friday. Slavin (23rd) was the first Brown and White runner to cross the line at 26:02.8, while DeMassa finished 27th at 26:06.2.

"Those two guys are feeding off of each other," stated head coach Todd Etters. "They ran a smart race! It's incredible to see them constantly improve."

Jeffrey Kirshenbaum finished third for Lehigh and 51st overall oat 26:43.2, while Sean Brown finished 57th overall at 26:50.3. Nick Norton (65th) was the fifth Lehigh finisher to cross the line at 27:04.

"Kirshenbaum had a real solid race for us," Etters said. "He put himself out there in the middle of the race and that will be a big-time confidence booster for him. Nick Norton also had a much-improved race today."

Michael Mitchell finished sixth for the Mountain Hawks and 79th overall with a time of 37:18.4, while freshman Connor Melko (81st) had a time of 27.21.1.

"Our team is moving in the right direction, but we have to do a better job at packing up behind our top guys. Going forward, it's crucial that we address that." Concluded Etters.

Up next, a few of Lehigh's runners will compete in the Leopard Invitational at Lafayette tomorrow morning.

At the Leopard Invitational on Saturday, Lehigh only ran two runners at Lafayette. Jacob Martinez finished 29th overall with a time of 27:58.83, while Riley Williamson (30th) finished with a time of 28:38.55.
