Lehigh Football Preview: Running Backs
8/9/2019 1:49:00 PM | Football
Throughout the month of August Lehighsports.com will be taking a position-by-position look at the 2019 Lehigh football team. The Mountain Hawks, under the direction of first-year head coach Tom Gilmore, opened preseason camp on August 1 and are preparing for the 2019 season-opener August 31 versus Saint Francis at Goodman Stadium.
We continue with a look at Lehigh's running backs.
Lehigh loses Dom Bragalone, the program's career leader in rushing yards, touchdowns and scoring, to graduation but returns some young talent. Sophomore Rashawn Allen is the top returnee. The Michigan native ran for 328 yards and three touchdowns as a freshman, while averaging 4.8 yards per carry. When an injury sidelined Bragalone for Lehigh's visit to Navy last September, Allen broke out with a 147-yard, two-touchdown effort against the Mids, including a 75 yard scamper on Lehigh's first play from scrimmage.
Â
"Rashawn did a really good job when he played last year," Gilmore said. "He had an outstanding game against Navy. He has all the physical tools, but he also has the mental tools. He's a very intelligent player. He's tough. He's very powerful, but he can also break away from people. We're going to rely very heavily on him in the run game, but also in the passing game as well."
Â
Junior Evan Chadbourn and sophomore Peter Lucas provide veteran depth behind Allen. Chadbourn has the versatility to contribute both in the backfield and as a slot receiver, while Lucas impressed with his effort and ability with increased work during Lehigh's spring segment.
Â
"Evan impressed me in the spring," Gilmore said. "He had an injury that he was battling through, but he didn't miss much time. He really had a productive spring. He can also play some receiver for us, but he really opened my eyes as far as his ability to play running back. Peter Lucas also had an outstanding spring."
Â
Also in the mix are a pair of talented freshmen runners, Nate Hope from Georgia and Zaythan Hill from North Carolina.
