Lehigh salvages third set, but falls to Texas Tech, 3-1

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Lehigh volleyball was finally able to pull off a set victory, but fell to Texas Tech in four sets, 17-25, 23-25, 25-23, 17-23 Saturday afternoon at the Covelli Center to conclude the Sports Imports Classic hosted by Ohio State.
In the first set, Lehigh got as close as one point early on, but the Red Raiders were able to maintain their distance and pull away for a 25-17 victory.
In set 2, after Lehigh called a timeout, the Mountain Hawks rattled off four consecutive points, thanks to back-to-back kills from Sabrina Lancaster and Julia Pressly and then a Texas Tech attack error and a Lancaster service ace to make it 15-14. Trailing 23-21, another Lancaster kill brought Lehigh within one, but the Red Raiders held on for the close set victory, 25-23.
The Mountain Hawks struggled early in the third set, trailing 13-7 to start with a service error by Sarah Carman. Trailing 17-12, Lehigh came back to life following four of five straight points from Lancaster and a Jess Donaldson ace mixed in to tie the game up at 17. With the set deadlocked at 18, Lehigh rattled off four of five points to take a 21-19 lead after kills from Lancaster and Emily Poole. Lehigh claimed four of the final five points in the set, capped off by a Lancaster kill from Allison Garrett to take its first set victory of the season, 25-23.
Lehigh trailed for most of the fourth set and never came close to have a chance to force a deciding fifth set. The Red Raiders claimed the set, 25-17 and the match victory, 3-1.
For Lehigh, Lancaster led the team with 18 kills on 42 attack attempts for a .310 percentage. She also had six digs and two blocks. Hannah Wright had 11 kills on 27 attempts for a .222 mark with four digs and a block, including two service aces. In limited playing time, Claire Nagelhout registered four kills on seven attempts for a .286 mark in two sets. Starting at libero, Allison Garrett led the way with 16 digs, while Sarah Carman had a career-high 39 assists. The Mountain Hawks hit .212 as a team including .345 in the third set.
With the defeat, the Mountain Hawks fall to 0-3 to start the season and for the first time since the 2009 campaign.
Lehigh will try to regroup next weekend when, along with Lafayette, it hosts the Crosstown Invitational with matches against Penn and Maryland Eastern Shore on Friday and Delaware State and Manhattan on Saturday. All four matches will be streamed live on the Patriot League Network.
