BETHLEHEM, Pa. — All of his hard work has paid off. Sophomore forward Josh Luchini is officially an NCAA Division I All-American, as announced by the United Soccer Coaches on Thursday evening. Luchini, named to the Third Team, is the only Patriot League member selected for All-America honors this season and becomes just the 15th player in program history and the first since Mark Forrest in 2017 to earn an All-America selection.
Additionally, Luchini is the first sophomore in Patriot League history to become an All-American, awarded by the United Soccer Coaches association.
"This is an outstanding achievement for any college athlete and a well-deserved honor for Josh and the Lehigh men's soccer program," said head coach Dean Koski. "He is one of only a handful of Lehigh alumni to be named an All-American."
On the contrary from other sophomore seasons, Luchini did not slump at all after a standout freshman season that saw him earn Third Team All-Patriot League honors after a six-goal, four-assist rookie campaign, starring alongside Forrest.
This season, Luchini excelled on the pitch, improving dramatically upon his 2018 numbers, finishing with 11 goals and two assists for 24 points, leading both the team and the Patriot League in goal-scoring. He was subsequently named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year and First Team All-Patriot League for his performances, also making year-end appearances on the First Team All-Atlantic Region team as well as an All-ECAC selection. Luchini recorded a hat trick against Boston University on Sept. 28 after scoring a goal against Penn days earlier and was recognized as National Player of the Week by both the United Soccer Coaches and College Soccer News for his performances.
Through two seasons and 40 career games, Luchini has totaled 17 goals and six assists for 40 points along with nine career game-winning goals. His dominance on the field is a big reason why the Mountain Hawks earned the top-overall seed in the Patriot League Tournament, ultimately going on to win their third title in program history and earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time.
