BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh senior linebacker Keith Woetzel is one of 16 student-athletes added to the watch list for the STATS FCS Buck Buchanan Award. The award, celebrating its 25th anniversary season, goes to the outstanding defensive player in the Football Championship Subdivision.
Woetzel has been at the heart of Lehigh's defensive resurgence in 2019. Lehigh's top tackler with 81 stops, Woetzel also leads the Mountain Hawks with 11.5 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks. On a national level, Woetzel ranks second in the FCS in solo tackles per game (7.4), fourth in sacks per game (1.06) and 12th in total tackles per game (10.1).
The Wyckoff, N.J. native recorded a career-high 16 tackles at UC Davis and was named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week following each of Lehigh's first two Patriot League victories. Woetzel opened league play with a 13-tackle, 2.5 sack effort at Colgate and then came back after Lehigh's second bye week of the season with 15 tackles, four sacks and an interception at Fordham. The four sacks tied for the second-highest single game total in school history. Woetzel was also named STATS FCS National Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against the Rams.
Lehigh's leading tackler in each of the previous two seasons, Woetzel's career numbers now include 259 total tackles, 23.5 tackles for loss, 10 sacks and two interceptions. He is ninth on Lehigh's career tackles list with a chance to move into seventh place this weekend.
Woetzel is the first Lehigh player named to a Buck Buchanan Award watch list since defensive end Tom Alfsen in 2004. In recent years, Lehigh has had several offensive players become finalists for the Walter Payton Award, given to the top offensive player in the FCS.
The Buck Buchanan Award is voted on by a national panel of media members and sports information directors at the conclusion of the regular season. It has been awarded annually since 1995 in honor former Grambling State and Kansas City Chiefs great. STATS will also present the Walter Payton Award (FCS offensive player of the year), Jerry Rice Award (FCS freshman player of the year), Eddie Robinson Award (FCS coach of the year) and Doris Robinson Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
The Mountain Hawks return to action Saturday at Bucknell with game time set for 1 p.m. from Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium in Lewisburg, Pa. The game will be televised on Stadium's over-the-air channel and the Patriot League Network, while audio coverage will be available on Fox Sports Radio 1230/1320 and 94.7 FM Allentown beginning at noon.
