BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh junior linebacker Pete Haffner has been named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. Haffner had seven tackles, a tackle for loss and the first two interceptions of his career as the Mountain Hawks came up seven points short against Holy Cross in their first Patriot League setback of the season.
This is the second career Defensive Player of the Week award for Haffner, who was also recognized last year for his efforts against Bucknell, the team Lehigh will face this Saturday in Lewisburg, Pa.
Haffner became the first Patriot League player with two interceptions in one game this season and is the first Lehigh player to accomplish the feat since Quentin Jones picked off two passes against Holy Cross in 2015.
Haffner's first interception came at the goal line on the opening play of the second quarter, thwarting a potential scoring opportunity for the Crusaders. His second came on a diving attempt in the third quarter and two plays later Tyler Monaco connected with Devon Bibbens on a 33-yard touchdown pass, which brought the Mountain Hawks within 24-14.
The State College, Pa., product tied for second on the Mountain Hawks with seven tackles on Saturday and had one of Lehigh's five tackles for loss on the day. As a unit, Lehigh held Holy Cross to just 122 passing yards, the fewest allowed by the Mountain Hawks this season.
The Mountain Hawks will visit Bucknell Saturday with game time set for 1 p.m. from Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. The game will be broadcast on Stadium's over-the-air channel and the Patriot League Network, while audio coverage will be available on Fox Sports Radio 1230/1320 and 94.7 FM Allentown beginning at noon.
