BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The Lehigh volleyball team picked up right where they left off from last weekend, taking down Bucknell in straight sets Saturday afternoon at Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. With the victory, the Mountain Hawks improve to 12-11 overall and 5-4 in the Patriot League to start the second round of league action. The sweep is also their third straight against a league opponent after taking down Holy Cross in three last Sunday and Loyola in three on Oct. 15.
The Mountain Hawks had control of the first set from the beginning, getting out to a 12-7 lead before Bucknell called a timeout. Lehigh won three consecutive points after the timeout to get out to a 15-7 lead. After taking a 16-9 lead, the Mountain Hawks dropped four consecutive points to 16-12, causing Lehigh to call a timeout.
A Lauren Bright kill from Sarah Carman gave the Mountain Hawks a 22-16 lead before the Bison called their second timeout. Lehigh won three of the final four points, ending with a kill by Emily Poole to take the set, 25-20 and a 1-0 lead.
In the second set, after getting out to a 10-8 lead, the Bison won four straight points to surge ahead, 12-10 causing the Mountain Hawks to take their first timeout of the second. Lehigh then went on a 4-0 run, capped off by a Kelsey O'Laughlin bad set, with the Mountain Hawks up 14-12. Lehigh finished the set on an 11-7 run, to take the set, 25-19 and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Lehigh and Bucknell played a tightly contested third set with the Mountain Hawks leading most of the way. Lehigh led 21-18 before the Bison took a timeout and ended up coming within one point before Lehigh took a timeout. A Sabrina Lancaster kill from Carman ended the set, 25-23 as Lehigh won the match, 3-0.
"I thought we did a really good job today from the service line, where we played really well," said head coach Alexa Keckler. "Defensively, I thought we made some great adjustments and worked really hard this week. Attacking-wise, it took us a little bit of time to get into a flow offensively with all of our hitters.
"I thought Jess Donaldson did a great job today overall, servicing and just getting a ton of stuff up. She went on a couple big service runs that were huge in giving us a little bit of a cushion. I think overall, I'm excited about the way the girls played, but I thought we had enough firepower to be able to pull it out."
Hannah Wright led the team with 11 kills and seven digs, hitting .214 for the match, while Sabrina Lancaster added 10 kills with seven digs. Lauren Bright, Emily Poole, Julia Pressly and Victoria Hemsath each recorded six kills to lead the Mountain Hawks. Senior libero Jess Donaldson had 15 digs, while sophomore setter Alina Lam registered another double-double with 18 assists and 14 digs. Sarah Carman led the way with 21 assists. The Mountain Hawks out-blocked Bucknell, 12-8, as Poole finished with seven block assists, while Bright added four block assists and a solo block.
Lehigh hit .192 as a team with 52 digs and 45 kills, while Bucknell hit .123 as a team including .000 in the second set.
The Mountain Hawks will get right back to work on Sunday afternoon against archrival Lafayette at 4 p.m. at Grace Hall. The match will be streamed live on the Patriot League Network.
"We've been talking about this for a while, where we have seven league matches left," said Keckler. "Every match matters and we can't look to the next one until we get this one. This was a great precursor to tomorrow where we have to stay disciplined. Ultimately, I thought they did a really solid job today, but we have less than 24 hours to turnaround where we have to play Lafayette in what is always an emotional, heated match."
