GLADSTONE, N.J. – Lehigh and Lafayette contested their annual President's Cup matches Tuesday at Hamilton Farms Golf Club. The cup changed hands for the fifth consecutive year with Lafayette reclaiming it by a 9-3 score.
The Leopards built a 3.5-2.5 lead after the morning's better ball and alternate shot nine-hole matches, then blew the competition by winning the first five of six singles matches. Lafayette now holds a slight 5-4 edge in the President's Cup matches, which began in 2011.
Senior Ryan Kelly led the way for the Mountain Hawks, as he had a hand in 1.5 of Lehigh's 2.5 points. Kelly teamed with freshman David Hurly to defeat Brendan Cronin and Will Halamandaris 2-1 to close out the alternate shot matches and also halved his singles match with Ryan Tall.
Lehigh's other full point came from senior Owen Quinn and freshman Joseph Dotta, who beat Tall and Drew Steiner 2-1 in better ball competition. Lafayette led in better ball action 2-1. The teams split alternate shot matches 1.5-1.5 with Lehigh's freshman duo of Alex Aurora and Sam Barton halving their match with Martin Vanhaelst and Kazuki Osawa. The Leopards went 5-0-1 in singles to win back the cup.
The Mountain Hawks and Leopards will meet again in stroke play in April.
Lehigh will close out its fall campaign this weekend when the Mountain Hawks host the Lehigh Invitational, Friday and Saturday on the Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club.
