Mountain Hawks drop road contest at American
9/29/2018 3:41:00 PM | Field Hockey
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Lehigh field hockey team played a hard-fought first half at American, standing within a goal 33 minutes in, but the Eagles pulled away in the second to beat the Mountain Hawks 9-1 on Saturday in our nation's capital. Sophomore Anna Lehman scored Lehigh's goal, her second in the last three Patriot League games, marking the Mountain Hawks' first goal against American since 2012. Lehigh returns to action on Sunday when it plays at Georgetown at 2 p.m.
Â
"We played a strong first half against a great team, but unfortunately couldn't maintain it," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "We fatigued early in the second half and lacked the ability to rally the way we needed to in order to stay in the game. Lapses of leadership and the ability to play solid 1v1 defense resulted in a big score for AU."
Â
American scored just 4:58 into the contest, but the Mountain Hawks settled in and held the Eagles scoreless for the next 28:18 as American took a 2-0 halftime lead.
Â
The lead reached 5-0 in the 50th minute, but Lehigh answered at the 52:19 mark behind Lehman's second goal of the season. The goal meant the Mountain Hawks scored in each of their first three Patriot League games for the first time since 2013. Lehigh scored its first goal against American since 2012 and first goal at American since 2009.
Â
"We have continued to work on playing an attacking game, which at times can expose us on defense," said Dallmeyer. "The positive was that we scored against a top-20 caliber team."
Â
The Eagles went on to score the last four goals of the game to wrap up the 9-1 final.
Â
Final shots were 29-4 in favor of American while the Eagles held a 15-1 edge in penalty corners. Sophomore Stephanie Brabender finished with seven saves in goal for the Mountain Hawks while sophomore Maddie Monahan added a defensive stop.
