BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Looking to build on its recent momentum, the Lehigh field hockey team is set for a busy weekend, at archrival Lafayette on Friday night (7 p.m.) and Fairfield on Sunday (1 p.m.). The games wrap up a five-game road trip for the Mountain Hawks. After last season's thrilling 1-0 overtime win over the Leopards, Lehigh will be eying a second straight victory over Lafayette for the first time since 2004-05.
Last weekend, Lehigh split a pair of games – beating Ball State for the first time since 1984 before falling to No. 22 Ohio State. The Cardinals actually scored first on Saturday, but a pair of freshmen scored for the Mountain Hawks as Leah Mullery evened the score and Olivia Perrone scored the game-winner, giving Lehigh a 2-1 win. Perrone was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week, becoming Lehigh's second straight winner of the award (following Mullery's two-goal performance at Villanova). The Mountain Hawks now have multiple Rookies of the Week for the first time since 2004. Mullery and Perrone have combined for four of Lehigh's last five goals. The fifth was scored by senior Lauren Dice via a penalty stroke.
The Mountain Hawks will look to continue the momentum from last season's big 1-0 overtime win over the Leopards. Junior Paige Innarella was sensational in that game, making 12 saves. Innarella has been strong once again this season. After a 17-save performance against No. 22 Ohio State Sunday, Innarella is now fourth in the Patriot League in save percentage 0.733, third in total saves (44) and second in saves per game (8.80).
Lafayette is 0-5 on the young season, most recently dropping a 5-1 final at No. 19 Maine. Liza Welch leads the Leopards with three points (one goal, one assist) while six others own one goal apiece. Sarah Park has started all five games in goal, recording a 4.57 goals against average and 0.610 save percentage.
Lafayette leads the all-time series, 39-13-3 with last season's 1-0 Lehigh win snapping the Leopards' 13-game winning streak in the all-time series.
Fairfield enters the weekend with a 6-1 record, also hosting UMass-Lowell on Saturday before Sunday's matchup against the Mountain Hawks. The Stags' only loss has come at Drexel by a 4-1 final. Danielle Profita leads Fairfield in points with 10 behind four goals and two assists. Sam Giordano has tallied eight points (two goals, four assists) while Emma Matlach has recorded seven (three goals, one assist). Zoe Rosen has started all seven games in goal, owning a 1.16 GAA and 0.793 save percentage.
The Mountain Hawks are 9-10 all-time against Fairfield, last playing in 2014, a 4-0 Stags' win. Fairfield has won five in a row in the series, with Lehigh's last win coming in 2009 by a 3-2 final.
Following this weekend, Lehigh will return home next Saturday (Sept. 22) to host Bucknell at 11 a.m.
