Mountain Hawks to cap busy week of action with trip to Navy Spring Invitational

4/12/2018 3:41:00 PM | Men's Golf

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's golf team will play its final full-field event prior to the Patriot League Championship as the Mountain Hawks head to Annapolis, Maryland for the two-day, 36-hole Navy Spring Invitational, beginning Saturday at the Naval Academy Golf Club.

Action will begin at 8:30 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday with 18 holes of play each day on Navy's par 71 course.

Twelve teams will be competing in the 38th edition of the Navy Spring Invitational, with Canisius, Drexel, George Washington, Manhattan, St. Bonaventure, Saint Francis (Pa.), St. Francis Brooklyn, Saint Joseph's, Shepherd and Towson joining Lehigh and the host Midshipmen.

Lehigh has posted four consecutive sub-300 rounds as a team since returning from its spring break trip to Florida. The Mountain Hawks finished second at Lafayette's April 1 Invitational and are coming off a seventh place finish out of 19 teams earlier this week at Villanova's Wildcat Invitational. Lehigh posted a team score of 589 (298-291) at Villanova and was led by junior Johnny Hsu, who used a final round 66 to move into a tie for fifth place at even par 142. The 66 is the lowest competitive round for a Lehigh player in the 2017-18 season.

Senior Billy Johns and sophomores Ryan Kelly and Owen Quinn are expected to be part of Lehigh's scoring team. Junior Eamon Marone competed at the Wildcat Invitational, while sophomore Chris Pollan competed as an individual.

The Navy Spring Invitational had been a regular stop as part of Lehigh's spring schedule, but the Mountain Hawks are playing the event for the first time since 2015, when it was a match play event. Johns competed in the 2015 match play event where Lehigh defeated Lafayette 4-2 before falling to the host Mids 5-1.

Following the Navy Spring Invitational, Lehigh will battle Lafayette in stroke play at The Steel Club in Hellertown, Pa. on April 24. The Mountain Hawks will then host the Patriot League Championship on the Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club April 28-29.
