Mountain Hawks drop two tight games on opening day of spring break trip

3/10/2018 7:50:00 PM | Softball

USF Series Under Armour Showcase home

TAMPA, Fla. – On the opening day of its spring break trip to Florida, Lehigh dropped two close contests at the USF Under Armour Showcase on Saturday. The Mountain Hawks were unable to hold an early 3-1 lead in a 4-3, 10-inning loss to Seton Hall in their first game of the day. A three-run third inning lifted Central Michigan past Lehigh 5-3 in the nightcap.

Junior Ashley Rabago led Lehigh with three hits, three runs scored and two stolen bases across the two games. Sophomores Reva Alderman and Mary-Hannah Smith each drove in two runs, but the Mountain Hawks fall to 2-9 with the two setbacks.

Trailing Seton Hall (12-11) 1-0 after half an inning, Lehigh opened its half of the first inning strong as the first four batters reached via three hits and a walk. Smith delivered a two-run single to center to put Lehigh in front 2-1. Alderman added a RBI fielder's choice to give the Mountain Hawks a 3-1 lead after one inning.

The lead lasted until the top of the sixth as the Pirates loaded the bases with one out behind two hits and an error. Junior Emily Sorem got Sara Foster to foul out to left field for the second out, but Janae Barracato delivered a two-out, two-run double to tie the game at 3-3. Seton Hall had a chance to take the lead, but Barracato was thrown out trying to stretch for a triple prior to the go-ahead run crossing home plate.

In extra innings, the international tiebreaker was implemented and Sorem was able to get through both the eighth and ninth innings unscathed. In the 10th, Payton Beaver's two out RBI single brought home the go-ahead run.

Lehigh loaded the bases with one out in the eighth, but could not push across the winning run. In the 10th, the Mountain Hawks put runners on the corners with one out but were unable to capitalize as Smith and Alderman both grounded out to third for the final two outs.

Sorem was dealt the loss, despite allowing just one earned run on seven hits in 10 innings of work. She walked four but struck out a season-best 10.

Lehigh out-hit Seton Hall 8-7 led by two singles by Rabago. Senior Nicole Yozzo went 1-for-3 with a run scored and her first inning stolen base was the 71st of her career, tying Tara Stine '00 for Lehigh's career record.

In game two, Lehigh jumped on Central Michigan (8-11) in the top of the first as Alderman singled home Rabago, but the Chippewas pulled even with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning.

Rabago helped manufacture the go-ahead run for Lehigh in the top of the third, reaching on an error, stealing second, moving to third on a pop out and then scoring on a RBI ground out by senior Carolyn Wright.

The first three Chippewas reached in the bottom of the third with Lacy Tolfree's RBI single pulling CMU even at 2-2. Sara Hansen's RBI ground out put Central Michigan in front for good and Erika Underwood added a RBI single in the frame.

Underwood tacked on her third RBI of the game with a fifth-inning single.

Lehigh pulled a run back in the top of the sixth on a run-scoring ground out by senior Rachel Timberman, but CMU's Hanna Warren limited Lehigh to just four singles, including two from Alderman.

Sophomore Parker Boyd threw the first five innings in the circle, and allowed five runs on 10 hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Senior Lindsay Phillips, a three-year infielder for the Mountain Hawks, made her pitching debut with a 1-2-3 sixth inning that included a strikeout.

The Mountain Hawks will have a short turnaround as they will be back on the field for two games Sunday morning. Lehigh will face Loyola Chicago at 9 a.m. and Central Connecticut State at 11:15 a.m. Live video will be available on YouTube via the USFSeries/Under Armour Showcase web site.
