
Mountain Hawks to kick off spring season at UNCG Martin Downs Collegiate

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's golf team is set to embark on a spring season that will begin a month earlier than normal and one that will culminate with the Mountain Hawks hosting the Patriot League Championship on their home course.

Lehigh is headed to Florida to open its season at the three-day UNCG Martin Downs Collegiate, beginning Sunday in Palm City, Fla. The Mountain Hawks are one of 10 teams that will play 18 holes per day on the 6,802, par 72 Osprey Creek Course at Martin Downs Golf Club.

The event is one of seven spring dates for the Mountain Hawks, who will play in four more invitational events and face rival Lafayette in stroke play, before hosting the Patriot League Championship Apr. 28-29 on the Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club.

The Mountain Hawks are coming off a strong fall campaign that saw them win the 12-team Lehigh Invitational in late October and tie for the top spot in the 17-team Matthews Auto Collegiate Invitational in early October.

Senior Billy Johns posted top 10 finishes in three of Lehigh's fall tournaments including tying junior teammate Johnny Hsu for medalist honors at the Lehigh Invitational.

Six of the nine players on Lehigh's roster will be in action at the UNCG Martin Downs Collegiate, with Johns and Hsu occupying the top two spots in the lineup. Sophomores Owen Quinn and Ryan Kelly will man positions three and four while junior Lee Hammerschmidt will play No. 5. Sophomore Chris Pollan will compete as an individual in Florida.

The 10-team field includes UNCG, Boston College, Elon, George Mason, James Madison, Mercer, Seton Hall, Lehigh, West Virginia and Western Carolina.

Following the UNCG Martin Downs Collegiate, Lehigh will return to Florida over Spring Break for the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular, hosted by George Mason, Mar. 17-18.

In April, Lehigh will take part in the Lafayette Invitational at Silver Creek Country Club in Hellertown (Apr. 1-2), Villanova's Wildcat Invitational in Malvern (Apr. 9-10) and the Navy Invitational, Apr. 14-15 in Annapolis. The Lehigh-Lafayette stroke play event will be Tuesday April 24 at Silver Creek Country Club.

The Mountain Hawks last won the Patriot League Championship in men's golf in 2013, which is also the last time Lehigh hosted the event.
