Hsu leads Mountain Hawks at spring-opening UNCG Martin Downs Collegiate

PALM CITY, Fla. – In its opening tournament of the spring season, the Lehigh men's golf team finished in eighth place out of 10 teams at the UNCG Martin Downs Collegiate, which concluded Tuesday on the Osprey Course at Martin Downs Golf Club. The Mountain Hawks finished with a final round team total of 293, their best of the three-day tournament, to end up with a final total of 896 (309-294-293).
 
Individually, junior Johnny Hsu shot one under par 71 in the final round to lead Lehigh, finishing in 34th place at six over par 222 (78-73-71). Hsu's 71 was the low round of the tournament for the Mountain Hawks and included four birdies and three bogeys.
 
Lehigh's low player through 36 holes, sophomore Owen Quinn, finished with a 76 to end the tournament in a tie for 35th at 233 (72-75-76). Quinn made three birdies in his final round but also carded seven bogeys.
 
Finishing one stroke behind Quinn was senior Billy Johns, who tied for 38th place at 234. Johns opened with a 79, then matched Hsu with a 73 on Monday before shooting even par 72, with four birdies, in his final round.
 
Junior Lee Hammerschmidt and sophomore Ryan Kelly both went 74-75 over their final two rounds. Hammerschmidt finished at 229 (80-74-75) to claim 55th place, while Kelly tied for 57th at 231 (82-74-75).
 
Sophomore Chris Pollan competed as an individual and finished in 64th place at 240 (86-74-80).
 
A final round 276 – the lowest of the tournament – lifted West Virginia to the team title at 13 under par 851 (297-278-276). The Mountaineers topped Seton Hall by two strokes.
 
Seton Hall's Gregor Tait was the individual medalist at nine under par 207 (67-69-71) to defeat West Virginia's Matthew Sharpstene by two strokes.
 
The Mountain Hawks will return to action and the state of Florida when they compete in the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular hosted by George Mason, March 17-18 in Howie-In-The-Hills, Fla.
