Mountain Hawks set for Wednesday night matchup at Yale

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Winners of four of its last five games, the Lehigh men's basketball team hits the road for a big mid-major matchup when it heads to Yale on Wednesday to face the Bulldogs. Opening tipoff is set for 7 p.m. The Mountain Hawks stand 5-2 on the season while Yale is 3-2, with the Bulldogs most recently beating Miami on Saturday. Four of Lehigh's five wins have come by double figures, including an 82-70 victory over Arkansas State Saturday.

The Red Wolves actually opened a 22-9 lead just over eight minutes into the game, but Lehigh answered with a 16-0 run, which reached 32-8 to end the half as the Mountain Hawks opened a 41-30 halftime advantage. Arkansas State pulled within five on multiple occasions in the second half, but Lehigh always responded. Late in the half, freshman Jeameril Wilson scored eight points in the span of 1:04 to help turn a 68-60 Lehigh lead into a 76-61 advantage with 5:16 remaining, all but erasing any doubt.

Senior Kyle Leufroy scored 20 points to lead the offense, already his third game this season with 20+ points (and ninth of his career). Sixteen of those points came in the first half, as Leufroy finished 7-of-9 from the field and 3-of-3 from three-point range. Leufroy is now shooting 56.7 percent from three-point range this season (17-of-30) and is now 28th in school history in career scoring (1,093). Junior Pat Andree isn't far behind at 51.2 percent (21-of-41) after knocking down 2-of-5 on Saturday and finishing with 14 points and a career-high tying three assists. As a team, Lehigh knocked down 56.3 percent of its threes (9-of-16), eclipsing 55 percent from distance for the second time in the last three games. The Mountain Hawks' 43.4 three-point field goal percentage is good for ninth in the nation. The hot shooting is no surprise for the Mountain Hawks, who finished ninth last season, 23rd in 2016-17 and 15th in 2015-16 in three-point shooting.

Senior Lance Tejada also enjoyed a strong bounceback game with 12 points and a career-high tying seven assists. Junior Jordan Cohen filled up the stat sheet with eight points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals. Sophomore Caleb Bennett had six points and a career-high tying five rebounds while classmate James Karnik tallied six points and four boards. Freshman Nic Lynch added six points and six rebounds. The win marked Lehigh's first in program history against the Sun Belt Conference. It was also Lehigh's first win when being outrebounded this season. Arkansas State finished with a 48-35 edge on the glass, but the Mountain Hawks held the Red Wolves to just 30.7 percent shooting (23-of-75). Lehigh has held its opponents under 40 percent shooting in four-of-seven games thus far (and under 42 percent shooting in all seven contests). Last season, it wasn't until Feb. 5 (game number 24) that the Mountain Hawks held their opponent under 40 percent for a fourth time.

At 5-2, Lehigh is off to its best start since 2012-13, when it started 9-2. The Mountain Hawks wrap up their pre-final exam schedule this week with games at Yale Wednesday and Mount St. Mary's Saturday. Wednesday will feature a matchup of Yale's 51.5 field goal percentage (eighth nationally) against Lehigh's 36.2 percentage defense (10th). Meanwhile, Lehigh is shooting 43.4 percent from three (ninth) while Yale's opponents are shooting just 27.4 percent (29th).

Yale is 3-2 on the young season, which includes power-conference wins over Cal and Miami with losses at Memphis and Vermont. All five of the Bulldogs' games have been away from home. Miye Oni leads the team in scoring (18.6 points per game) and is second in rebounding (5.6) while Jordan Bruner is averaging 13.0 points and a team-leading 6.0 rebounds. Two others are averaging double-figure points - Alex Copeland (11.2) and Azar Swain (11.0).

After Wednesday's game, Lehigh heads to Mount St. Mary's on Saturday to face the Mountaineers at 4 p.m.
