BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Two members of the Lehigh football team's defensive unit have been named to the Academic All-Patriot League team, announced Wednesday. Senior defensive lineman Harrison Kauffman has made the team for the second consecutive season. He is joined by sophomore linebacker Pete Haffner, who makes his debut on the Academic All-Patriot League team.
Kauffman and Haffner are two of 15 Patriot League football student-athletes recognized for their efforts in the classroom in addition to on-field performance.
To be eligible for the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor. The football Academic All-Patriot League Team has 14 student-athletes to equal one-half the size of the sport's All-Patriot League first team. The Academic All-League teams are voted on by the league's sports information directors. This year's football squad has 15 members due to a tie in the voting.
Kauffman's second appearance on the Academic All-League team comes a week after he was named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District 2 Team for the second straight season. Earlier this season, Kauffman was named a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, given to college football's top scholar-athlete. The three-year member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll holds a 3.45 cumulative GPA in accounting and finance.
One of Lehigh's team captains in 2018, Kauffman started all 11 games on the defensive line, finishing with 33 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. Kauffman is part of a 22-member senior class that clinched a 4-0 record against rival Lafayette with a 34-3 win Saturday in Rivalry154 in Easton.
Haffner makes his first Academic All-League team after posting one of the top cumulative GPAs on the Lehigh team. He holds a 3.62 GPA in Lehigh's College of Business and Economics and made Lehigh's Dean's List with a semester GPA better than 3.6 last spring. Haffner was named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll following his freshman campaign, and was recognized for the National Football Foundation's Chapter Scholar-Athlete Award last fall for his academic accomplishments at State College Area high school.
On the field, Haffner appeared in all 11 games, starting the last three at linebacker. Haffner finished with 48 tackles, one tackle for loss and three pass breakups, highlighted by a 10-tackle effort in which he added a tackle for loss in an early November win over Bucknell. That performance helped Haffner win Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year honors.
Bucknell punter Alex Pechin was voted Scholar-Athlete of the Year for football for the second consecutive season.
