Men look for 27th straight victory; Women go for 11th straight
BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The Lehigh men's and women's swimming and diving teams continue their rigorous schedule when they take on archrival Lafayette in Easton on Friday evening.
Â
Both teams are coming off impressive showings at the Big Al Invitational at Princeton University last weekend. While the teams themselves didn't fare as well as the other teams they swam against, it was all about individual successes where many school and freshman records were shattered.
Â
The men come into Friday's meet against the Leopards looking very strong in specific events, especially in freestyle events with Patriot League Male Swimmer of the Week Walker Wilson leading the way in multiple events.
Â
Wilson is coming off a weekend where he broke two school records in the 500 freestyle and the 200 backstroke. The 200 back event will surely be an enticing event on Friday once again after Joe Huber and Matt Feryo both broke the record before Wilson broke Huber's school record in the very next heat. On top of big performances in those two events, Wilson also swam to a time of 20.56 in the 50 free, good enough to qualify for the U.S. Winter National Championships at the end of the month.
Â
Wilson, Huber and Feryo will definitely be factors in the Mountain Hawks' performances on Friday, but also look out for freshmen Glenn Lasco, Connor Sept and Joey Rogers who are all threats for freshman records, which have already been broken over the last two meets.
Â
The men are also back in the saddle for dual meets again, victorious in their last three meets for a 3-1 record on the season. Against Lafayette, Lehigh should be expected to win big, as the Mountain Hawks lead the all-time series 75-14. The Lehigh men have not dropped a meet to Lafayette since the 1991-92 season, victorious in the last 26 meetings.
Â
The Leopards are led by Justin Lloyd in freestyle events as well as Kyle Doherty and Tanner McFarland.
Â
The women face a similar battle as the men when they also head to Easton on Friday night. The Mountain Hawks are led by Patriot League Female Swimmer of the Week Ann Foley, who completely dominated the weekend at the Big Al Invitational at Princeton.
Â
Foley posted the fastest Patriot League times in all of her events this past weekend and swam excellently in the 50 and 200 freestyles with times of 23.32 and 1:48.04, respectively. In the 100 freestyle, Foley placed second at Princeton with a time of 50.20 and three of her four swims ranked among the top 24 fastest times in NCAA Division I last week.
Â
Like the men, the women also had their chances to break school records over the weekend, just missing out on making history in some cases by mere tenths of seconds.
Â
Sophomore Anna Francisco missed out on breaking Rachel Rider's '18 school record for the 100 backstroke by .01 seconds, finishing with a time of 55.76. Sophomore Malia Wolf also came dangerously close to breaking a school record in the 100 fly, with her time of 55.47. As time progresses and swimmers get stronger through more practice, the records will only continue to fall as both the men and women continue to improve as teams.
Â
The Mountain Hawk women have had very similar success against Lafayette with the Leopards last getting the best of Lehigh during the 2007-08 season. Lehigh is 31-13 all-time against Lafayette.
Â
"Lehigh-Lafayette is never just another meet for us," said head coach Rob Herb. "Jim (Dailey) is a wonderful head coach and good friend. His teams are always really well prepared when they go against us.
Â
"We have the upper-hand, yes, but at any given moment we don't like to give an inch and they're always trying to get that inch. That's where the struggle is. We might win the meet, but there's more at stake than just that for them and for us and that's where I think it becomes very interesting."
Â
This meet will be Lehigh's final meet as a team until Dec. 5 when they travel to nearby Emmaus High School to take on La Salle. Next up on the schedule, however is the U.S. Winter National Championships in Greensboro, N.C. where Walker Wilson and hopefully others will be able to compete amongst some of the best collegiate swimmers the United States has to offer.
