GLADSTONE, N.J. – The number of participants were fewer than in recent years but Lehigh will take the result as the Mountain Hawks won back the President's Cup from rival Lafayette in the annual match play event at Hamilton Farms Golf Club. With just five available players, Lehigh went 2-0-2 in morning better ball and alternate shot and then captured two more points in afternoon singles to post a 5-4 victory.
Senior Lee Hammerschmidt personally had a hand in two of Lehigh's five points, while classmate Eamon Marone contributed 1.5. The annual October match play event is now even at 4-4 since its inception in 2011. Lehigh and Lafayette have alternated wins in the last four years.
Hammerschmidt and Marone set the tone early with a 2 and 1 win over Cole Berger and Will Halamandaris in the first nine hole better ball match. Juniors Owen Quinn and Ryan Kelly halved their match with Ryan Tall and Brendan Cronin, giving Lehigh a 1.5-0.5 lead after the better ball matches.
Senior Max Redetzke teamed with Marone to halve their alternate shot match with Berger and Halamandaris, while Quinn and Kelly defeated Tall and Cronin 3 and 1 to put the Mountain Hawks up 3-1 heading into singles.
Hammerschmidt opened singles play with a 1 up win over Kaz Osawa, while Redetzke and Marone halved their respective singles matches to give Lehigh the five points necessary to take back the Cup.
Lafayette won the final two singles matches to reach four points.
The Mountain Hawks and Leopards will meet again in stroke play in April.
Lehigh will close out its fall campaign this weekend when the Mountain Hawks host the Lehigh Invitational, Friday and Saturday on the Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club.
