
Defending medalist Quinn leads Lehigh into Matthews Auto Intercollegiate

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After a three-week layoff, the Lehigh men's golf team will return to action Sunday for the sixth annual Matthews Auto Intercollegiate, hosted by Binghamton at the Links at Hiawatha Landing in Apalachin, N.Y. The 36-hole tournament begins with 18 holes on Sunday and will conclude with 18 holes Monday in what will be the second of five fall events for the Mountain Hawks.
In its first fall event, Lehigh picked up a fifth-place finish in the Alex Lagowitz Memorial Invitational. Senior Billy Johns anchored the Mountain Hawks, tying for third place overall at two over par 218 (70-71-77). Sophomore Ryan Kelly tied for 29th place at 227 (76-72-79) while junior Johnny Hsu tied for 32nd place at 228 (77-76-75).
In addition to Lehigh and Binghamton, the 17-team field features Canisius, Fairleigh Dickinson, Hofstra, Lafayette, La Salle, LIU-Brooklyn, Monmouth, Niagara, the University of Ottawa, Rider, St. Bonaventure, St. Francis, St. Joseph's, Siena and Villanova.
Sophomore Owen Quinn returns to Matthews Auto Intercollegiate as the defending individual champion. Quinn finished the tournament at nine under par 135 (69-66) to defeat Lafayette's Will Halamandaris by one stroke. Quinn became the first Mountain Hawk to earn individual medalist honors in a tournament since Johns won Villanova's Wildcat Invitational in 2015. Quinn led the Mountain Hawks to an eighth place finish last fall.
Action on both Sunday and Monday will begin at 9 a.m. Binghamton will offer live scoring on GolfStat.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action next week for the Connecticut Cup before beginning preparation for the Presidents Cup against rival Lafayette on Oct. 17. Lehigh will then close out the fall portion of its schedule with the Lehigh Invitational Oct. 20-21.
