
Lehigh ties for first but loses team title on tiebreaker at Matthews Auto Invitational

APALACHIN, N.Y. – An impressive final round 289 moved the Lehigh men's golf team into a tie for the team lead at the Matthews Auto Collegiate Invitational Monday on the Links at Hiawatha Landing. The Mountain Hawks tied St. Bonaventure at 586, but unfortunately the tiebreaker, fifth score from round two, gave the Bonnies the team trophy. Lehigh finished with rounds of 297 and 289 in the two-day, 36-hole event.

Senior Billy Johns and sophomore Owen Quinn both posted individual top 10 finishes. The team title went to the team with the best fifth score on Monday as St. Bonaventure's Nolan Ditcher (78) edged sophomore Ryan Kelly by one stroke.

Johns carded a final round 70 that included six birdies and a 33 on the back nine to tie for sixth place at 144 (74-70). Quinn was medalist last year and tied for 10th this year at 145 (73-72). He also made six birdies in his final round, including four on the back side.

Junior Johnny Hsu tied for 18th at 149 (76-73), carding five birdies in his final round.

Kelly finished at 153 (74-79) and tied for 38th place, while junior Lee Hammerschmidt posted Lehigh's fourth score on Monday, a 74, and tied for 42nd place at 154 (80-74).

Monmouth's Nikolas Maff and Ross Pilliod of Saint Joseph's posted the top individual totals at four under par 140. Maff's final round 69 gave him the tiebreaker.

St. Bonaventure and Lehigh held off third place Binghamton by two strokes.

Lehigh will return to the links at the Connecticut Cup, hosted by UConn, Oct. 9-10 in Ellington, Conn.
