Strong final day helps Lehigh to sixth place finish at Connecticut Cup

ELLINGTON, Conn. – A pair of sub-300 rounds Tuesday propelled the Lehigh men's golf team to a sixth place finish in the 15-team Connecticut Cup, which concluded with the final two rounds at Ellington Ridge Country Club. The Mountain Hawks shot 294 in the resumption of the suspended second round and finished strong with a 289 in the final round to post a 886 (303-294-289).

Sophomore Owen Quinn broke par in his final two rounds to crack the top 10, tying for ninth place at two over par 218 (77-70-71). Quinn's second round 70 was the low round of the tournament for the Mountain Hawks.

One stroke behind Quinn was junior Johnny Hsu, who posted a final score of 219 (74-73-72) to tie for 12th place.

Sophomore Ryan Kelly and junior Lee Hammerschmidt each carded 73s in Tuesday's final round. Kelly tied for 30th place at 223 (76-74-73), while Hammerschmit finished at 234 (80-81-73) and tied for 77th.

Lehigh's fifth player was senior Billy Johns, who tied for 69th place at 231 (76-77-78) and tied for 69th.

The Mountain Hawks' sixth place finish was tops among the three Patriot League schools in the field. Colgate finished eighth, while Lafayette finished in 10th place.

Tournament host UConn took the team title at even par 864 (284-293-287), besting Cornell by six strokes.

The individual medalist was Cornell's Mike Graboyes, who shot three under par 213 (71-75-67) to post a one stroke win over Rhode Island's Dawson Jones.

The Mountain Hawks will play rival Lafayette in the annual Presidents Cup matches Oct. 17 at Hamilton Farms Golf Club in Gladstone, N.J., before closing out the fall season by hosting the Lehigh Invitational on the Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club Oct. 20-21.
