BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh volleyball program has announced that Xiomara Ortiz has joined the Mountain Hawk coaching staff as the new top assistant for the start of the 2017 season. Ortiz comes to Bethlehem following a three-year stint as the top assistant coach at Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y.
"I am very excited to become part of the Mountain Hawks family! I am looking forward to joining an athletic department that truly believes in the holistic views of the scholar-athlete experience at the Division I level," sated Ortiz. "The success of the volleyball program thrives on each valued effort of the players through a competitive drive on the court and academic excellence in the classroom. Lehigh shares that same value and I wish to continue expanding the tradition of the overall success of the program and even believe that competing for Patriot League titles are realistic and attainable in the near future."
In addition to her coaching duties at Hartwick, Ortiz served as the head advisor for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) during which she worked with student-athletes to organize community service events, campus-wide social events and professional development opportunities. She also served on the Hartwick institutional and NCAA departmental awards committees as a representative for student-athletes and athletic staff.
Outside of the collegiate realm, Ortiz also has coaching experience at the club level and through working various high-level summer camps. She served as head coach of the Whirlwind Volleyball Club out of the Binghamton, N.Y. area during the 2013-14 season. Ortiz has also served as camp director for several Bob Bertucci Volleyball Camps and Adelphi University Nike Camps over the last three summers.
A South Setauket, N.Y. native, Ortiz compiled a stellar four-year playing career at Binghamton University as a libero. She played in 116 of the Bearcats' 117 matches in her four seasons and set program records for career digs (1,925) and digs in a season (551). She was named to the America East All-Rookie Team in 2010 and earned a spot on the American East All-Conference Second Team the following season. She was also a three-time member of the America East Honor Roll.
In her junior season, Ortiz ranked first on the team and third in the America East in digs for the second-straight season. She registered at least 20 digs in 12 matches and recorded 30 three times, including a career-high 32 digs in matches against Cornell and Albany.
During her senior campaign, she accumulated another 468 digs, finishing fourth in the conference and setting the all-time record at BU. She also hit the 32-dig mark for the third time in her career against New Hampshire.
Ortiz graduated from Binghamton University in May 2014 with a bachelor's degree in anthropological perspectives. She is currently pursuing a master's of public administration degree through Binghamton.
