BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's golf team saved its best for last on the final day of the Patriot League Championship as the Mountain Hawks delivered the low round of the day, with a school record 298 Sunday on the Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club. The score lifted the Mountain Hawks into sole possession of third place at 930 (314-318-298).
"The weather was working against us yesterday and we just were never able to get it going," Lehigh head coach Judy Dwyer said. "But it was so great to see us play to our potential today."
Individually, senior Elizabeth McGarrigle and sophomore Aileen Jeong tied for the low round of the day with a one over par 73.
McGarrigle and sophomore Reagan Jahn delivered a wild sequence on the 138-yard, par 3 fifth hole, with Jahn passing through first with a hole-in-one as part of the second-to-last group that teed off on the first hole. McGarrigle then came through in the next group and matched Jahn with an ace. The holes-in-one are the first in the five-year history of the Patriot League Women's Golf Championship and the second and third for Lehigh this year. Jeong had a hole-in-one at the Princeton Invitational in October.
"To think that they were back-to-back holes-in-one on the same hole and both of those women are our captains, which makes it even more unique," Dwyer said. "It really shows a lot about our leadership this year and our team climate and why they were so successful."
The hole-in-one and final round 73 helped McGarrigle serve as Lehigh's top finisher at 11 over par 227 (77-77-73). McGarrigle earned first team All-Patriot League honors for the second straight year as she tied for third place. She was two under par through her first nine holes and carded three birdies in addition to her ace.
Jahn also earned All-Patriot League honors, solidifying a spot on the second team with an eighth place finish at 231 (77-78-76). She earned second-team all-league honors for the second consecutive year.
Jeong delivered a nice bounce back effort following a tough finish to Saturday's second round. Last year's Rookie of the Year carded five birdies on Sunday to shoot 73 in the final round and finish in 14th place at 239 (79-87-73).
Freshman Minuette Laessig tied for 16th place and shared Patriot League Rookie of the Year honors at 241 (81-84-76). Laessig tied with Jackie Gonzalez of Holy Cross as the low freshman finishers in the field. Lehigh has now won or shared the Rookie of the Year award in three of the first five Patriot League Championship events.
Lehigh's two other championship competitors were junior Megan Moylan, who finished in 19th place at 243 (82-79-82) and freshman Rebecca Markunas who shot 259 (83-92-84) to finish in 29th place.
Richmond and Boston University battled to the very end in a tight team race, with the defending champion Spiders pushing ahead late to win their second straight title at 916 (298-312-306). Boston University finished two strokes behind at 918, 12 shots ahead of Lehigh, which finished 33 shots clear of fourth place Navy.
Boston University senior Adela Cejnarova won the individual championship for the third consecutive year with a final score of 222 (74-71-77), defeating teammate Phyllis Tang by three strokes.
Lehigh's final round 298 set the school record for single round in a tournament, surpassing a 300 from the Delaware Invitational in October 2015.
