Lehigh men to open spring at Mission Inn Spring Spectacular

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's golf team will open its spring season this weekend at the two-day Mission Inn Spring Spectacular, hosted by George Mason at the Mission Inn Resort in Howie-in-the-Hills, Fla.
 
Seventeen teams will compete in the 54-hole event with 36 holes on Saturday and the final 18 on Sunday. Teams will be playing the El Campeon Course, par 72 at 6,966 yards.
 
In addition to Lehigh and host George Mason, the field includes: George Mason, Elon, Saint Joseph's, Bethune-Cookman, Toledo, TCU, Florida A&M, Ohio, George Washington, Presbyterian, Dayton, Hofstra, Bucknell, Marquette, Air Force and Florida Atlantic.
 
Lehigh last played in the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular in 2015, tying for 12th place in an 18-team field.
 
The Mountain Hawks enter the spring with nine players, none of who are seniors. Lehigh played four fall tournaments, with a top finish of second place in the Lehigh Invitational, plus a 9-7 match-play victory over Lafayette to win the Presidents' Cup. The Mountain Hawks actually tied Bucknell in the Lehigh Invitational but lost the team title in a playoff.
 
Junior Billy Johns is the most experienced player on Lehigh's roster. Johnny Hsu, the top finisher for Lehigh at the Lehigh Invitational leads a four-man sophomore class that also includes Lee Hammerschmidt, Eamon Marone and Max Redetzke.
 
Lehigh received solid contributions from its freshman class in the fall, with Owen Quinn earning individual medalist honors at the Matthews Auto Collegiate Invitational and Ryan Kelly planting himself in Lehigh's regular lineup. Ryan Kelly and Joseph Ender round out the roster led by head coach Henry D'Alberto.
 
The Mission Inn Spring Spectacular is the first of six spring events for the Mountain Hawks. Lehigh will also play in Villanova's Wildcat Invitational (Mar. 27-28), the Lafayette Invitational (Apr. 2-3) and La Salle's Finegan Invitational (Apr. 10). The Mountain Hawks will host Lafayette in stroke play on April 25 at Saucon Valley Country Club in a final tune-up before the Patriot League Championship Apr. 29-30 in Lewisburg, Pa.
