BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Two Lehigh football defensive linemen: senior Jimmy Mitchell and junior Harrison Kauffman have been named to the Academic All-Patriot League Team, it was announced Wednesday. The honor comes less than a week after both players were named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 2 Team.
Mitchell and Kauffman are two of 14 Patriot League football student-athletes recognized for their efforts in the classroom in addition to on-field performance.
To be eligible for the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor. The football Academic All-Patriot League Team has 14 student-athletes to equal one-half the size of the sport's All-Patriot League first team. The Academic All-League teams are voted on by the league's sports information directors.
Mitchell made the Academic All-Patriot League Team for the second consecutive season. He is a finance major who is using his fifth year to pursue a second degree in accounting. In September, Mitchell was named a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell trophy, given to the nation's top football scholar-athlete.
A two-year starter at nose tackle and a team captain, Mitchell started Lehigh's first eight games in 2017 making 11 tackles including half a tackle-for-loss. He suffered a season-ending injury in the Oct. 28 game at Fordham, but was able to dress and get on the field in the victory formation at the end of Lehigh's league title-clinching win over Lafayette.
Kauffman makes the Academic All-Patriot League team for the first time to go along with his All-District honor. He is a finance major with a 3.55 GPA who has made a pair of appearances on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
On the field, Kauffman has started all 11 games on the defensive line. He has 24 tackles, 1.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles-for-loss. Kauffman set a career-high with nine tackles at Wagner and recorded sacks at Monmouth and Fordham.
Bucknell punter Alex Pechin was voted Scholar-Athlete of the Year for football.
