BETHLEHEM, Pa. – As the Lehigh football team prepares to face Lafayette Saturday in the 153rd-meeting of college football's most-played rivalry, two Mountain Hawks have been recognized for their academic prowess by being named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 2 Football team on Thursday.
Â
Fifth-year senior defensive lineman Jimmy Mitchell and junior Harrison Kauffman were both recognized as being among the district's top performers on the field and in the classroom.
Â
The Academic All-District teams are voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) whose schools are in the region. District 2 consists of schools from Washington, D.C., Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. To be eligible for the team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or better and be a starter or key reserve.
Â
Mitchell and Kauffman are the third and fourth Lehigh football players in the last three years to earn CoSIDA Academic All-District honors. Chris Ruhl was recognized in 2015, while Micah Tennant received the honor last year and went on to become a first team Academic All-American.
Â
A two-year starter and three-year contributor who also serves as one of Lehigh's team captains, Mitchell holds a 3.48 GPA. A finance major, Mitchell is using his fifth year to pursue a second degree in accounting. In September, Mitchell was named a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell trophy, given to the nation's top football scholar-athlete.
Â
Mitchell started Lehigh's first eight games in 2017 making 11 tackles including half a tackle-for-loss. He suffered a season-ending injury in the Oct. 28 game at Fordham.
Â
Kauffman if a finance major with a 3.55 GPA. The Montana native is a two-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
Â
On the field, Kauffman has started all 10 games on the defensive line. He has 22 tackles, 1.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles-for-loss. Kauffman set a career-high with nine tackles at Wagner and recorded sacks at Monmouth and Fordham.
Â
The Mountain Hawks host Lafayette Saturday in the 153rd edition of the Rivalry, with game time set for 12:30 p.m. from Goodman Stadium. Lehigh's ticket allotment is sold out with the exception of a handful of standing room only tickets released Thursday. Tickets are still available through Lafayette. A win over Lafayette would give Lehigh its second straight Patriot League championship and would clinch the league's automatic bid to the FCS playoffs.
