Two early goals lead Lehigh to 3-0 Senior Day win over Holy Cross

10/28/2017 4:16:00 PM | Women's Soccer

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Junior Clare Severe set the tone with an 11th-minute goal and later added insurance in the 76th minute to help lead the Lehigh women's soccer team to a 3-0 win over Holy Cross on Senior Day Saturday afternoon. Severe's two goals were a career high, doubling her career total entering the game. Sophomore Annika Jansa added a 35th-minute goal off a free kick while classmate Sam Miller made seven saves for her ninth shutout of the season, and 21st of her career.

"It's always great to have Senior Day and get a couple early goals," said Lehigh head coach Eric Lambinus. "It settles the nerves a little bit. I was really impressed with the way we played and the way we approached the week. It was a great result."

With the win and Boston University's win over Colgate, Lehigh will be the No. 5 seed and play at No. 4 seed Colgate on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Prior to the game, seniors Alyssa Riporti, Amanda Stratton, Becca Sherry Adrian Vitello, Lexi Chang and Grace Correll were recognized prior to their final regular season home games in the Brown and White.

"Our seniors all bring different things to the table," said Lambinus. "This was probably the best game Amanda has ever played. Not only was she an unbelievable defender against some good players, but she also started our attack a lot of times. Adrian was all over the field, covering every blade of glass like she always does. Alyssa, in the first half, had three or four great tackles which set the tone. Lexi and Grace gave us a lot of energy up top, they work hard and put themselves in good positions. Becca on the sideline too, it's unfortunate she's not able to play, but she brings a great energy, happiness and enjoyment to what we do. I don't know what we'd do without any of our seniors."
The Mountain Hawks took a 1-0 lead at the 10:39 mark as Chang was positioned in the center of the box and fed Severe to her left, who subsequently beat Holy Cross goalkeeper Caroline Cashion with a shot inside the right post.

Lehigh added to its lead at 34:12 as Jansa took a free kick just outside the box, curving a perfect shot into the top left corner of the goal to give Lehigh a 2-0 halftime advantage.

The Crusaders outshot the Mountain Hawks 13-4 in the second half, but Lehigh's defense did a good job of creating shots from distance. Lehigh converted one of its chances into an insurance goal as sophomore Mary Casey fed classmate Kayla Arestivo near the end line, who found Severe right in front of the goal. The Bethesda, Md. native did the rest, giving Lehigh a 3-0 advantage at 75:31.

Holy Cross' best chances came in the 80th when it fired three consecutive shots from in close. The first was saved on the goal line by Riporti, the second was blocked and Miller snagged the third, keeping the Mountain Hawks ahead 3-0 which proved to be the final.

Final shots were 17-14 in favor of Holy Cross while Lehigh held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

The fifth-seeded Mountain Hawks will now head to fourth-seeded Colgate Raiders for the Patriot League Quarterfinals on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

"Colgate is a really good team, so we'll have to go up there and play as well as we did today and as well as we've played all season," said Lambinus. "They're a great attacking team and they have a tradition of winning so it's going to be a huge challenge for us to go up there and win, but I think we're pretty confident in the way we want to play."
