Lehigh picks up hard-fought Patriot League win at Colgate

10/28/2017 4:22:00 PM | Field Hockey

HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Lehigh field hockey team put together a strong all-around effort to earn a hard-fought road win at Colgate, 1-0 on Saturday. Freshman Drew Pecora scored the Mountain Hawks' goal in the 47th minute while sophomore Paige Innarella made six saves for her third shutout of the season. With the win, Lehigh will finish the season tied for fifth place in the Patriot League standings with Lafayette at 2-4 in league play, but the Mountain Hawks will finish ahead of the Leopards for the first time since 2007 due to their 1-0 head-to-head victory on Oct. 6. Lehigh wraps up its season at Cornell on Sunday afternoon.

"I am really proud of our team for making some big adjustments this week in the way we prepared for this game," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "We've had several starters out with injury and we were able to easily move players into new positions and see them thrive. Paige had a great performance in goal, really anchored our defense and we were thrilled to see Amanda Boyer step into a vocal role on the field. This was a strong Colgate team, which makes the win even more satisfying."

Innarella stood tall in the first half as Colgate held an 8-4 edge in shots, but the sophomore goalkeeper made five first-half stops to keep the game scoreless at the half.

Junior Teresa Carotenuto came out of halftime with the first two shots of the second half. Lehigh continued to pressure, leading to the game's first goal at the 46:51 mark as senior Jackie Renda found Pecora, who scored her fifth goal of the season.

From there, the Mountain Hawks allowed just one shot on goal the rest of the way, which Innarella saved in the 53rd minute. Lehigh continued to pressure, as Carotenuto had a shot on goal in the 62nd minute and freshman Lenke Havas had one in the 66th minute. Colgate goalkeeper Maria Krull made her fifth and sixth saves of the season, but it wasn't enough as the Mountain Hawks held Colgate to just five second-half shots (only one on goal) to wrap up its fifth win of the season (and second in the Patriot League).

Final shots were even at 13 while Colgate held a 5-3 edge in penalty corners.

The Mountain Hawks will close out their 2017 season on Sunday when they play at Cornell at 1 p.m.
