ITHACA, N.Y. – The Lehigh field hockey team wrapped up its season on Sunday by dropping a 4-0 final at Cornell. Sophomore Paige Innarella made six first-half saves to keep the Mountain Hawks within 1-0 at the half, but the Big Red scored twice in the first 8:02 of the second half to create separation. Lehigh wraps up its season 5-13, including 2-4 in the Patriot League. The season saw plenty of highlights, including the Mountain Hawks defeating Lafayette for the first time since 2005 and finishing ahead of the Leopards in the standings for the first time since 2007. Lehigh also picked up three 1-0 victories, its most 1-0 wins in a season since 2000.
Â
Cornell tallied the first eight shots of the game, but Innarella made four saves in that span to keep the game scoreless. However, after her fourth stop of a Maddy Conklin shot, Grace Royer put home the rebound to give the Big Red a 1-0 advantage at the 15:42 mark.
Â
The Mountain Hawks responded with the next three shots, including chances by Teresa Carotenuto in the 21st and 22nd minutes, but both shots were saved by Cornell goalkeeper Kelly Johnson.
Â
The Big Red added to their lead early in the second half, with goals at 42:38 and 43:02. The Big Red added an insurance marker at 60:48 to account for the 4-0 final.
Â
Final shots were 20-4 in favor of Cornell while the Big Red held a 4-2 edge in penalty corners. Innarella finished with nine saves while Johnson tallied three for Cornell.
Â
The game marked the final collegiate contests for seniors Jackie Renda, Julia Washburn, Alexis Arancio and Laura Yuh, who have certainly left a lasting legacy.
Â
"I am so proud of the seniors and how they have helped to instill values within this program," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "I feel strongly that they have brought consistency to this program where there wasn't consistency before. We see that in the way we train, in the way we build relationships within the team and the way we want to lead. Consistency is progress for this program and I hope they are proud of the legacy they are leaving."
