BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team will wrap up its 2017 season this weekend when it travels to Colgate on Saturday (11 a.m.) and Cornell on Sunday (1 p.m.). Following two wins in three games (both at home), over Lafayette and Georgetown, the Mountain Hawks dropped a pair of tough decisions last weekend - home vs. No. 22 Boston University and at Columbia. Lehigh will look to finish off a season of progress on a high note.
Among several areas of progress in 2017 has been strong defense. For a third straight season, the Mountain Hawks have allowed one goal or fewer in five games - this after not doing so since 2004 (when it happened six times). Sophomore goalkeeper Paige Innarella has been especially strong of late, recording 42 saves over her last five games including save totals of 12, 10, nine and nine, respectively. For the season, she owns a 2.79 goals against average and 0.679 save percentage.
Last weekend, Innarella played well against the Terriers and Lions. She stopped six-of-eight shots in the first half against Boston University to keep Lehigh within striking distance at the half. Innarella then stopped five-of-six first-half shots vs. Columbia Sunday to keep the Mountain Hawks down just one following 35 minutes of play.
Colgate is coming off a strong weekend which featured a 1-0 win over Colgate and 2-1 victory over Brown to improve to 4-11 overall while the Raiders are 0-5 in Patriot League play. Michaela Corvi leads the team with 13 points behind six goals and one assist while Iona MacKillop has eight points (three goals, two assists). Maria Krull has been strong in goal, recording a 2.35 goals against average and 0.794 save percentage. Colgate's other wins have come vs. LIU Brooklyn (2-1 in double overtime) and Siena (1-0).
The Raiders lead the all-time series with Lehigh, 19-15-1, but the Mountain Hawks have won two straight. Last season, Lehigh earned an impressive 6-0 home victory while two years ago, it defeated Colgate 2-1 in overtime.
Meanwhile, Cornell is 8-5 on the season and 2-3 in the Ivy League. Lehigh will be the Big Red's fourth Patriot League opponent in 2017; they have previous beaten Bucknell (1-0), Lafayette (2-0) and lost at Colgate (1-0). Cornell is led offensively by Krysten Mayers, who has 13 points (five goals, three assists) while Sam McILwrick owns 12 points (five goals, two assists) and Katie Carlson has 10 (two goals, team-leading 10 assists). Kirsten Pienaar leads the Big Red with three defensive saves while Maddie Henry has seen the majority of time in goal, recording a 1.23 GAA and 0.812 save percentage.
Cornell leads the all-time series with Lehigh, 23-1-1. Most recently, the Big Red defeated Lehigh 4-0 last season.
