Lehigh pulls out 3-2 Senior Day victory over Georgetown

10/15/2017 4:09:00 PM | Field Hockey

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Junior Teresa Carotenuto scored two goals, then assisted on freshman Drew Pecora's game-winning goal with just seven minutes remaining as the Lehigh field hockey team picked up a hard-fought 3-2 win over Georgetown on Sunday afternoon. It was Senior Day as Jackie Renda, Laura Yuh, Julia Washburn and Alexis Arancio were all recognized prior to the contest. The win is Lehigh's second in its last three contests and second straight at home, heading into the final four regular season games of the year.

"The team did a really nice job of working on some things we talked about yesterday that we didn't do so well and making the adjustments for today," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "Discipline of this team is something we've been focusing on all season and today, we really needed discipline to win the game. There was a lot of physicality in this game, which is something we don't typically see and I thought we held our ground really well and we were pretty strong on the ball."

Georgetown came out with the first five shots and three penalty corners of the game, taking a quick 1-0 lead at the 7:35 mark as Anna Farley's deflection off a corner found the back of the cage.
Just over four minutes later, Carotenuto evened the score on Lehigh's first shot of the contest as she took a feed from Renda and beat Georgetown goalkeeper Chloe Verwiel with a low shot near the top of the circle.

In the 17th minute, Carotenuto converted the Mountain Hawks' second shot into a goal as well to give Lehigh a 2-1 advantage, with Pecora recording the assist.

Innarella stopped the first six shots sent her way in the second half, but none was better than her 56th minute stop. The Hoyas made a cross from Innarella's left to her right, but the sophomore goalkeeper somehow found a way to make a sprawling save on Michaela Bruno, keeping Lehigh ahead.

Georgetown tied the score just over one minute later, but the Mountain Hawks had an answer. Off a penalty corner, Carotenuto fed the ball towards the cage. It was blocked, but Pecora corralled the loose ball right in front of the netminder and she wouldn't be denied, giving Lehigh a 3-2 advantage at exactly 63:00.

The Mountain Hawks held Georgetown to just one shot and one penalty corner the rest of the way to hold onto the 3-2 victory.

"We've struggled a little bit with our attack line in trying to generate the number of shots that we want," said Dallmeyer. "I thought today, things came together really nicely. Teresa (Carotenuto) was stellar; she did a nice job not only generating a lot of attack herself, but also being a good leader out there and helping the people around her. We also draw a lot of energy from Paige (Innarella), so when she's coming up with big plays, that really helps us mentally - to stay in the game and make a push."

Final shots were 21-16 in favor of Georgetown while the Hoyas held an 11-5 edge in penalty corners. Innarella finished with 10 saves, her second straight home game in double figures, while Vermiel tallied four for the Hoyas.

"This is the second year in a row we've been able to pull out in a win on Senior Day, which is fantastic," said Dallmeyer. "This senior class has really defined what we want good leadership to look like moving forward in our program. We hopefully can watch them and learn from them in what they've been able to do in their four years and how they've carried themselves so we can continue to emulate that as younger classes moving forward. It's something we've talked about quite a bit and we talked about that before the game, taking the characteristics they embody and bringing that onto the field today. I thought we did a nice job of that."

The Mountain Hawks return to action on Saturday when they host Boston University at 1 p.m.
