BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh volleyball team opens its 2016 Patriot League schedule with a home matchup against rival Lafayette on Wednesday night. Opening serve is slated for 7 p.m. at Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall.
The match will be streamed live on the Patriot League Network (PLN) and live stats will be available at lehighsports.com.
The Mountain Hawks (4-9) are coming off a 1-3 performance at the competitive Panther Challenge last weekend hosted by the University of Pittsburgh. Lehigh picked up a 3-1 win last Friday evening over Robert Morris, last season's Northeast Conference Champion, to snap a four-match skid and a 10-set losing streak. The Mountain Hawks suffered two 3-0 losses last Saturday to Pitt and Western Kentucky, two teams both ranked just outside the top-25 in last week's poll.
Junior Kelly Bennett and sophomore Emily Develle were both named to the Panther Challenge All-Tournament Team. Bennett led the team with 21 kills on the weekend, while Develle led the squad with 45 digs.
Lafayette will also open the Patriot League portion of its schedule on Wednesday night. The Leopards will roll into Leeman-Turner Arena with a 2-8 record and a six-match losing streak. Lafayette has lost all of its last six matches by the score of 3-1. The Leopards have only played one true road match this season, which they lost 3-1 last Saturday at Penn. Â
Wednesday night will be the 85th meeting between these two programs dating back to 1974. Lehigh owns a 54-30 record against Lafayette in the all-time series. The two teams split the season series last year with the visiting team claiming both victories. The Leopards swept the Mountain Hawks in the first meeting of the season at Leeman-Turner Arena, while Lehigh returned the favor with a sweep over Lafayette later in the season at the Kirby Sports Center. The loss to Lafayette last season ended an 11-match win streak the Mountain Hawks had compiled against the Leopards.
Following Wednesday night's match, the Mountain Hawks will hit the road for two Patriot League matches this weekend. Lehigh will face Navy on Friday at 7 p.m. and then travel up to Baltimore, Md. to face Loyola at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
