LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell's Lauren Hadley delivered a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Bison to a 3-2 win over Lehigh in the series finale between the two teams Tuesday at Becker Field. The Mountain Hawks squandered a pair of early one-run leads as the Bison were able to avoid the series sweep.
The loss drops Lehigh to 33-13 overall and 11-3 in the Patriot League. The Mountain Hawks' lead over Army West Point is down to one game in the loss column. Lehigh's magic number to clinch the Patriot League regular season title currently stands at three.
The Mountain Hawks raced to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning as junior Vicky Lattanzio led off with a single. Following a sacrifice bunt, sophomore Carolyn Wright delivered a two-out single to center field that scored pinch runner Nicole Yozzo.
Bucknell (27-21, 11-7 PL) answered with a run in the bottom of the second on Chaylen Andolino's RBI single but the Mountain Hawks threw a runner out at home plate and then freshman Emily Sorem struck out Amanda Fazio to keep the score 1-1 after two innings.
Lehigh reclaimed the lead in the third as freshman Ashley Quidolit led off with a double to left and moved to third on a sacrifice before senior MacKenzie Velasquez singled her home.
Sorem kept the Mountain Hawks in front with perfect thurd and fourth innings, but the Bison rallied to tie the game in the fifth. Meghan Kovac's two-out RBI single scored Carolyn Wan to tie the score at 2-2 after five innings.
Lehigh got the go-ahead run into scoring position in the seventh but Fazio got Velasquez to ground out to third with two on to end the threat.
Wan reached on an infield single to begin the bottom of the eighth and was sacrificed into scoring position. Sorem got Anna Gimmestad to ground out for the second out but after intentionally walking Kovac to put runners on the corners, Hadley took an 0-1 pitch into center field to bring home the winning run.
Fazio earned the win for Bucknell, allowing two runs on eight hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Sorem was dealt the loss, allowing three runs on 11 hits. She struck out five and walked one but falls to 14-6 with the loss.
Lattanzio and Wright led Lehigh with two hits apiece.
The Mountain Hawks will host Delaware in a single game Wednesday beginning at 3:30 p.m. from Leadership Park before hosting Holy Cross for three key league games this weekend. All four upcoming home games will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network.
