Mountain Hawks drop Friday morning contest to Boston U. in Patriot League Tournament

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Boston University's Melanie Russell held Lehigh without a hit through six innings and received six runs of support in the first four innings to lead the visiting Terriers to a 6-2 win over the Mountain Hawks in the winner's bracket game at the Patriot League Tournament Friday morning at Kaufman Field.
Junior Vicky Lattanzio and senior Jessica Calvini registered RBI hits for Lehigh's only two hits of the game. The Mountain Hawks (36-15) will now face the winner of Army West Point and Bucknell in an elimination game.
The Terriers scored four runs in the bottom of the second to provide plenty of support for Russell. Emma Wong led off the single, took second on a fielder's choice and moved to third on an error. With runners on the corners and two outs Emily Morrow lined a single off Lehigh starter Emily Sorem, scoring Wong to give BU a 1-0 lead. Brittany Younan then followed with a single to left to give the Terriers a 2-0 lead. Junior Christine Campbell came on in relief of Sorem and Moriah Connolly greeted her with a double to left, plating two runs to up BU's lead to 4-0.
Boston University (27-22) added two runs in the fourth on a two-out, bases-loaded single by Gabi Martinez.
Russell retired the first 13 Mountain Hawks, before hitting Calvini with one out in the fifth.
Lehigh finally put together a rally in the seventh as senior MacKenzie Velasquez drew a leadoff walk. With one out Lattanzio drilled a double over Jilee Schanda's head in center field and Velasquez raced around from first to put the Mountain Hawks on the scoreboard. Calvini followed with a sharp single up the middle, scoring pinch runner Nicole Yozzo to bring Lehigh within 6-2. Russell then got sophomore Cassie Lajeunesse to pop out and struck out sophomore Lindsay Phillips to end the game.
Russell finished with a line of two runs on two hits. She walked one and struck out three.
Sorem took the loss for Lehigh, allowing four runs on four hits in 1.2 innings. Campbell allowed the other two runs on four hits in two innings of work, while Lattanzio contributed 2.1 scoreless innings of relief.
Lehigh will next face the winner of an elimination game between Bucknell and Army West Point. That game was suspended after one inning of play due to rain and will resumed Saturday at 9:30 a.m. The Mountain Hawks will face the winner of that game in an elimination game beginning at noon.
